NCCU Athletics Celebrates National Girls & Women In Sports Day

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central University will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Thursday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. during the last women's basketball home game of the season against Hampton University in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium. The admission for this game is free.

There will be many activities held at this game in recognition of NGWSD. During timeouts, the NCCU Department of Athletics will recognize local pioneers for girls and women in sports. At halftime, there will be a youth exhibition game by the Durham Hurricanes, an all-girls 7-9 year-old basketball team that plays in an all-boys AAU league. Also during halftime, girls and women that participate or have participated in sports will be recognized with a certificate of appreciation. Following the game, there will be an autograph session with both the NCCU Lady Eagles and the Durham Hurricanes.

Girls and women who play or have played sports at any level are encouraged to wear your uniform or sports attire to the game.

NGWSD is a nationwide celebration that began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women sports. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports and achievements.

This event also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Title IX, which was passed to give women equal opportunities in education, including participation in sports.
