BALTIMORE -- Senior Tony Gallo led five players in double figures with 21 points, but Morgan State shot 58.9 percent from the floor and spoiled the Eagles regular-season finale with a 91-80 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Coppin State on Wednesday in the Physical Education Complex.
Coppin State (13-14, 8-6 MEAC) overcame a 21-point first half deficit to take the lead at halftime, but Morgan State outscored the Eagles 46-34 in the second half.
Morgan State (7-18, 4-9 MEAC) received 19 points from Aric Brooks, 17 points from Justin Black and 12 points each from Jeremy Canty and Ian Chiles.
Logan Wiens connected on a three-pointer with 10:22 to play giving Coppin State a 66-65 lead. Morgan State regained the lead for good when Justin Black hit a driving layup with 8:51 left in the game giving the Bears a 67-66 lead. Canty then hit three three-pointers during a 16-7 run that pushed the Morgan State lead to 87-75 with 3:14 to play.
Gallo hit two free throws and hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 87-80, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get. Both teams shot over 50.0 percent from the floor in a wild first half.
Morgan State shot a blistering 60.0 percent from the floor in the first half and built a 38-17 lead with 8:38 to play in the opening period. Coppin State then began a rally that saw the Eagles overcome the deficit and take a lead into the intermission.
The Eagles trailed 43-27 with 4:19 to play before closing the half on a 19-3 run to lead the Bears 46-45 at the break.
Aric Brooks scored a career-high 19 points and Justin Black 17 for Morgan State. WHile teammates Ian Chiles added 12 points and Kevin Thompson had 11 rebounds for Morgan State.
Michael Harper and Akeem Ellis each had 14 points for the Eagles, while Wiens and Antonio Williams finished with 11 points each.
