Lady Pirates Win Home Finale Against Delaware State

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton won its home finale on Monday night, upending Delaware State 71-44 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (20-4, 12-1 MEAC), in picking up their fifth straight win, have won 20 games for the third straight season (a Div. I program first) and finished the 2011-12 campaign 9-1 at home. Hampton has also held its last four opponents under 50 points.

Sophomore guard Nicole Hamilton and junior forward Keiara Avant each led the Lady Pirates with 14 points, while senior guard Chocietta McMillian added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Avant, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, also had a team-high 11 rebounds. Senior guard Jericka Jenkins had a team-high nine assists.

Tierra Hawkins led the Lady Hornets with 12 points.

SC State Rally Falls Short in 76-69 Loss to FAMU

ORANGEBURG, SC - South Carolina State erased all but three points of an 18-point deficit with just over 10 minutes left but visiting Florida A&M held on for a 76-69 win Monday in a MEAC contest at S-H-M Memorial Center.

The host Lady Bulldogs, trailing 63-45 with 10:23 on the clock, got a 3-pointer from Tracey Flowers to spark an 18-6 run that pulled SC State to within 69-66 when Tiana Hemphill made the first of two free throw attempts with 2:35 left.

Flowers had eight of her 11 points during the run, Lauren Johnson nailed two 3-pointers and Hemphill added five points as Coach Doug Robertson's team rallied to within three.

Tiara Knotts had 17 points - including a 2-4 effort from behind the arc, to lead the Lady Bulldogs in the loss, their second in as many outings as Robertson's team fell to 11-13 overall and 6-7 in the MEAC.

Florida A&M, which also got 11 points each from Jasmine Grice and Kabrina Merriweather, improved to 19-6 overall and 12-1 ii the MEAC.

Eight Straight for Howard With  A 62-49 Win Over UMES On Senior Night

WASHINGTON, DC -Howard won its eighth straight, 62-49, over the Maryland Eastern Shore (9-16, 6-7 MEAC) at Burr Gym on senior night. The Lady Bison, now 21-7 on the season and finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 10-1 home record.

Three players reached double-figures en route to their 13th conference victory. Tamoria Holmes had a solid night with 22 points, five assists, three steals, and a career-best three blocks in 39 minutes of action. Saadia Doyle finished one board shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Zykia Brown tallied 10 points - just one shy of her 1,500th point - and pulled down six off the glass.

As a team, the Lady Bison finished with a 31.3 shooting clip (15-for-28). HU scored 20 points off 23 UMES miscues, while committing 18 of its own.

For the Lady Hawks, Kwinnyata Mercer notched 12 points, while Sanders tallied 10. Amber Cook chipped in with eight points in 29 minutes of action.
