Shelley C. Davis has been appointed to the NCAA Division 1 Women's Basketball Issues Committee as announced by the NCAA Committee Appointment Committee.
Davis' appointment will officially begin on September 1, 2012 and will run through September 1, 2016. The committee places a special emphasis on recruiting activities, development and public perception, and makes recommendations on policy issues unrelated to legislative and playing rule changes.
"This is a huge honor to be able to serve as a voice for the HBCUs," said Davis. "It is extremely important to have national representation, especially with the success of some of our women's teams this year." The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is currently on track to have three of its teams (Hampton, Howard and Florida A&M) post 20-win seasons, a first in conference history.
Davis is currently the Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator for Howard University. In this role, Davis is responsible for overseeing the internal operations of the Athletic Department. Her wide range of experience brings variety of facets of athletics administration.
Prior to joining the Bison family, Davis served as the Assistant Commissioner for Championships and Senior Woman Administrator at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). As Assistant Commissioner, Davis was responsible for the planning, operations, and management of the SWAC Conference Championships and other events.
Davis is no stranger to national committees. Previously she served on the NCAA Division I Championships and Sport Management Cabinet and she currently serves on the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators Nominating Committee.
She has also served as the Director of Education and Professional Development at the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), where she planned and directed all aspects of the educational and professional development programming, including the marketing and promotions, budget management, development, and administration of three annual leadership institutes. Working in this capacity also allowed Davis to be involved in Title IX and Gender Equity education initiatives, in addition to diversity education programming.
Prior to joining the NACWAA national staff, Shelley was an Assistant Athletic Director at North Carolina A&T State University (A&T). At A&T, Davis had compliance and student-athlete services responsibilities. Additionally, Davis was integral in the success of the 2006 NCAA Division I East Regional Track and Field Championships held at A&T. She assisted with the event operations and served on the Local Organizing Committee for that and several other high exposure Track & Field Meets, including the USA Track and Field Youth Championships.
Davis got her start in athletics as a certified athletic trainer and held positions in sports medicine at Virginia Union University and North Carolina A&T State University prior to transitioning into athletics administration. She also served as interim head men's and women's track and field coach at Virginia Union University for a brief stint.
Davis is a graduate of the 2011 Class of the NCAA Minority Male and Female Leadership Institute as well as several other leadership institutes.
She graduated with honors from North Carolina Central University.
