HAMPTON, Va. –
Hampton University senior guard Jericka Jenkins has been featured on the
website for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, her story told by her high school
basketball coach.
Beverly Lockett, who coached
Jenkins at Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Texas, shared her account of
Jenkins’ high school career – including her battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma,
which was diagnosed after Jenkins’ freshman year.
Lockett detailed Jenkins’
battle and how she never missed a game or practice during treatment.
Read Lockett’s account here.
As of Feb. 13, Jenkins leads
the nation in assists with 8.0 per contest, and she is second on the team in
scoring with 14.2 points a game. Jenkins has recorded at least six assists in
each of her last 13 games, leading the Lady Pirates (18-4, 10-1 MEAC) to a tie
for first place in the MEAC heading into Saturday’s 4 p.m. tilt against
Maryland Eastern Shore.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was
founded in 2007 in the memory of legendary N.C. State women’s basketball coach
Kay Yow, who died of breast cancer in 2009. Yow formed the Kay Yow Cancer Fund
prior to her death, thanks in large part to partnerships with the Women’s
Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation
Since its inception, the
fund has raised %5.2 million and granted $2.15 million for research. To learn

Jenkins and the Lady Pirates
will be back in action on Saturday, when they take on Maryland Eastern Shore at
