MEAC ANNOUNCES TENNIS WEEKLY HONORS

South Carolina State's Dymtro Kovalevych and Bethune-Cookman’s Stacey Speller were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Athletes of the Week the conference announced today. South Carolina State's Katarina Barborikova earned the Women's Rookie of the Week honor.

Kovalevych (Sr., Ukraine) was 2-0 last week against Savannah Art & Design. He defeated SCAD’s Dean Loock 6-1, 6-0 at the number one singles position. In doubles, Kovalevych teamed with Anton Protsenko at the number two spot to capture the point 8-2. 

Speller (Sr., Bronx, NY) defeated Natalia Melibeu of Jacksonville in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) in the number two singles spot. She also topped Gabriela Bartos and Djessika Bezerra (8-2) in doubles competition with teammate Shereen Peterson-Paul.

Barborikova (Fr., Bulgaria) won in singles action against Savannah Art and Design’s Andrea Gonzalez (6-3, 6-1). In doubles play, Barborikova teamed with Laura Bosneag to earn the point for South Carolina State (8-6) and help the Lady Bulldogs to a 7-0 win. 

Other Top Performances:

Victoria Austin (NCAT) captured a win over Shaw’s Sade Thomas (6-0, 6-0) for her third straight singles match win.

Alexis Brown (FAMU) defeated Clark Tatje of Stetson (6-2, 6-4) to pick up the Rattlers only point.

April Burrage (NCAT) went 3-1 in singles and doubles play last week, with a singles win against Shaw’s Aline Ferreria (2-6, 7-5, 6-1).

Maria Craciun (SCSU) topped Maria Barrigan of Savannah Art and Design (6-3, 6-1) to help guide South Carolina State to a 7-0 win.

C. Ksalif Kante (FAMU) won in singles action against Nicholls State’s Dmitry Kozionov (6-4,6-1).

Rebecca Wood (NCCU) defeated Danielle Terpko of East Carolina 2-6, 7-6 (10-4) at the number four singles position.
