Cornell Holds Off Morgan State, 77-73; Jarrett Scores Career-High 26 In Loss

ITHACA, N.Y. -Morgan State's Bianca Jarrett scored 16 of her career- and game-high 26 points in the first half and Tracey Carrington added 20 points but it wasn't enough, as host Cornell defeated Morgan State, 77-73 in a non-conference game at Newman Arena.

The loss was the Lady Bears third straight and now evens the all-time series against Cornell at 1-1.

Jarrett finished the afternoon connecting on 9-of-16 shooting and a season-best six three-pointers on 10 attempts.

Cornell (5-3) was led by Clare Fitzpatrick, who finished with a team-high 20 points and Allyson DiMagno added 19 points, including 11-of-12 from the free throw line. As a team the Big Red shot 32 free throws, connecting on 27 of them for 84 percent.

Morgan State (3-5) shot 12-of-13 from the charity stipe for 92 percent. The Lady Bears also held a slim 35-32 rebounding advantage over Cornell. Jarrett finished with a team-high seven rebounds to go with a team-high four assists.

For the game the guests shot 27-of-57 (47 percent) from the floor, including 43 percent (7-for-16) from the three-point arc.

Cornell finished 23-of-55 (41 percent) and 4-of-14 (28 percent) from 3-point range.

Lady Pirates Beat SCSU, Pick Up First Meac Win

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -Hampton got back into the win column on Saturday, beating South Carolina State 59-46 in its MEAC opener at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Arena.

Sophomore guard Kenia Cole led the Lady Pirates with a career-high 20 points, while also dishing out a career-high five assists. Senior forward Keiara Avant added 12 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Senior guard Olivia Allen and junior guard Nicole Hamilton each added 10 points.

Paris Alston had a team-high 10 points, for the Lady Bulldogs all in the first half.

Hawkins Leads Lady Hornets In Meac Opener

Dover, Del. (Dec. 1, 2012) --- Sophomore Tierra Hawkins tied her career high with 28 points to lead Delaware State to a 67-52 win over UMES in the MEAC opener for each team in Memorial Hall this afternoon. Hawkins was 12-for-15 from the field in the contest. She also led the Lady Hornets with seven rebounds.

DSU won its second straight game to improve to 2-3 on the season. The Lady Hornets also snapped a four-game losing streak to UMES, defeating the Hawks for the first time since Jan. 12, 2011.

Tasia Bristow and Deanna Harmon added 13 points each, while Keyanna Tate contributed 11 points, two assists, two blocks and two steals for DSU. Harmon (6-6), Tate (5-5) and Bristow (4-4) were a combined 15-for-15 at the free throw line in the game.

Karona Roach led the Lady Hawks in scoring for the third consecutive game with 14 points, adding five rebounds and a team-high six steals. Long added 13 points with four rebounds, while Ashleigh Claybrooks earning a career-high nine rebounds with four points and two blocks.

Lady Rattlers Fall to Virginia Commonwealth 86-57

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-Florida A&M dropped their home opener as Virginia Commonwealth defeated FAMU, 86-57, Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center. 

FAMU (2-4) had two Lady Rattlers to finish in double-digits as Kimberly Sparkman led all scorers with 24 points and dishing out six assists, while Jasmine Grice recorded a double-double on the night with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

VCU (3-4) had five Lady Rams to score in double figures as Robyn Parks scored a team high 19 points, followed by Jessica Pellechio with 14.  Kaneisha Atwater pumped 13 points on the night, while Janniina Koivunen added 12 and Robyn Hobson finished with 10.  Shekinah Henry led the Rams on the boards with 14 and the VCU had three different players to finish with four assists each.

Lady Eagles Fall To Rival Aggies 67-27

GREENSBORO, N.C. - During first-year head coach Vanessa Taylor's first MEAC game and the 31st meeting between the North Carolina Central and the rival Lady Aggies from North Carolina A&T State, the Lady Eagles struggled offensively falling,67-27, Saturday Dec. 1, in the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Redshirt senior Chasidy Williams led the maroon and gray with eight points and five rebounds, while junior Tiffany Gary contributed five points and a game-high 10 points.

Lady Eagle freshman Amber Neely scored six straight points, leading the team at the half with six of their 13 points.

North Carolina A&T's Tracy King and Jessica Lyons finished the game scoring in double-figures. King finished with 22 points, followed by Lyons 10. JaQuayla Berry finished with a team-high of nine rebounds for the Lady Aggies.

Kalu Leads Savannah State over NSU, 62-55

SAVANNAH, Ga. -   Ezinne Kalu led all scorers with 21 points to lead Savannah State over NSU, 62-55, in their first MEAC game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga.

Recca Trice and Aivah Parham led the Spartans with 12 points each.  Trice, who scored all 12 of her points in the second half, also had seven assists and two steals.  Parham tallied eight rebounds.

Aside from Kalu, the Tigers also had two other players finish with double figures including Andrietta Thomas who had 11 points and Jasmine Kirkland who added 10.
