Hornets Edged by Penn State in Overtime, 80-76

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Delaware State was 73 seconds away from its first-ever win against a Big Ten team, but Penn State scored the last seven points of the game in an 80-76 overtime victory over the Hornets at Bryce Jordan Arena this afternoon.

DSU led 76-73 when Tyshawn Bell hit a three-point shot with 1:13 left in the extra period. Penn State tied the game on a three-pointer by Jermaine Marshall with 1:00 left.

The Hornets had an opportunity to regain the lead on the ensuing possession, but Tahj Tate missed two free throws with 46.5 seconds remaining in the extra period.

Penn State took advantage of the break when D.J. Newbill hit a basket with 28 seconds left to give the Lions a 78-76 lead.

After Delaware State failed to score on its next possession, Penn State's Brandon Taylor hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to secure the win for the Lions.

The Hornets trailed 21-3 in the early going but closed to within 37-29 at the half.

Coppin State Falls in Overtime

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Andre Armstrong scored 14 points, but Marcus Burton scored seven of his 17 points in overtime leading Wagner to a 77-65 victory over Coppin State on Saturday in the Spiro Sports Center.

Jonathon Williams opened the overtime with a dunk and Burton followed with a three-pointer igniting a 13-0 run as the Seahawks took a 75-62 lead with 1:52 to play in overtime.

Taariq Cephas connected on a three-pointer to cut the lead to 75-65 with 31 seconds to play, but that would be the only points the Eagles scored in the extra session.

Williams finished with 33 points and 17 rebounds to lead Wagner, while Burton finished with 17 points.

Wagner (4-4) outscored the Eagles 38-18 in the paint and scored 25 points off of Coppin State turnovers.

Wildcats Fall to Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH - With Bethune-Cookman close at 25-21, Pittsburgh used a 20-4 run to close the first half and then dominated the final 20 minutes en route to an 89-40 non-conference victory over the Wildcats Saturday night at the Peterson Events Center.

An Adrien Coleman lay-up with 7:07 left in the first half put the Wildcats (4-8) within four before the Panthers (10-1) took control and a 44-24 halftime lead, then limited the Wildcats to 16 second-half points.

Freshman Steven Adams had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while J.J. Moore scored 18 points and was 8 of 12 from the field. Talib Zannaand and Lamar Patterson each scored 11 for the Panthers, who connected on 67.3 percent (37 of 55) of their shots.

Paul Scotland led B-CU with seven points, while Coleman, Alex Smith and Javoris Bryant each scored six.

B-CU enjoyed one lead, 5-4, on a Scotland three-pointer two minutes into the game.

The Wildcats return home to face Florida Christian Monday night at 7 p.m. in historic Moore Gymnasium.
