UMES Holds Off North Florida For First Road Victory
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UMES withstood a late comeback attempt by the Ospreys to defeat North Florida 54-52, earning its first road win of the year. The Lady Hawks go to 3-5 while North Florida falls to 3-7.
UMES finishes the Lady Osprey Holiday Tournament at 1-1 after a defeat to Campbell and a win over North Florida. Campbell finished 2-0 with wins over UMES and Jacksonville State.
Karona Roach led UMES with 19 points in this contest. She earned a place on the All-Tournament Team after combining for 37 points in the two games this weekend.
Jadhken Kerr led the Ospreys with 11 points, also contributing six rebounds and four steals. Merkerson had a near double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Howard Endures Heartbreaking 60-61 Loss Against George Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C.- After securing a game-high 13-point lead by the 5:26 mark of the second half, George Washington paced to a 19-5 run to defeat the mighty Lady Bison of Howard University 61-60 on Saturday, Dec. 15 in the Charles E. Smith Center on the GW campus.
The Colonials snapped the Lady Bison win streak with a three-point basket at the .06 mark and took the lead with a free-throw for a four-point play by GW's Tara Booker.
In the loss, freshman Imani Bailey scored a career-high 15 points, while seniors Saadia Doyle, Cheyenne Curley-Payne and Kara Smith each scored in double figures. Doyle finished with 15, Curley-Payne tallied 14 and Smith netted 12 points, as Doyle pulled down nine rebounds and Curley-Payne circulated four assists and stole four GW possessions.
By the number, Howard was 33 percent from the field (17-52), 54 percent from the long range (7-13) and 63 percent from the free-throw line (19-30).
Howard drops to 4-5 on the season, while George Washington advances to 5-5.

Williams' Double-Double Not Enough For NCCU In Loss To Winthrop
DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central senior guard Chasidy Williams poured in 16 of her team-high 20 points after intermission and added 11 rebounds for her 12th career double-double, but it was not enough for the Lady Eagles in a 63-44 loss to Winthrop aon Saturday inside McDougald-McLendon Gym in Durham, N.C.
The visiting Eagles of Winthrop sizzled the nets from long range, draining 12 of 26 three-point attempts for a shooting percentage of 46.2 percent from behind the arc. Senior Diana Choibekova led the way with seven three-pointers as part of her game-high 23-point performance.
Winthrop had two other double-figure scorers with Aliyah Kilpatrick collecting 10 points, six rebounds and a team-best six assists, and Samiya Wright posting 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. Schaquilla contributed six points along with team-highs of eight rebounds and two blocked shots for the visitors.
NCCU rookie guard Amber Neely matched a season-high with 11 points, while junior forward Tiffany Gary contributed eight points and nine boards.

UNC-Greensboro Downs Norfolk State, 71-63
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Rachel Gordon had her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 16 rebounds but it was not enough as Norfolk State fell to UNCG, 71-63, at Fleming Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. NSU falls to 1-8 overall while UNCG improves to 2-6.
UNCG's Lucy Mason led all scorers with 22 points and capped a 6-2 run for the Spartans as she drained a 3-pointer with 17:52 to go in the first half to keep UNCG ahead of NSU, 6-2.
Kashay Barnes tallied 11 points, five assists and three steals for NSU while Ebony Brown and Aivah Parham added nine points each for the Spartans. NSU was held to 34.2-percent shooting while UNCG shot 36.4 percent. NSU won the rebounding battle 51-39.
Aside from Mason, UNCG had three other players in double-figures including Ciara Morris, who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Janae Stevenson had 11 while Jarae Savage had 10 points.

North Carolina A&T Defeats Liberty
LYNCHBURG, Va.- North Carolina A&T picked up a key win against Liberty on Saturday afternoon at the Vines Center, defeating the defending Big South champions 60-56.
The Aggies (5-3) snapped the Flames' five-game winning streak, and held Liberty (7-4) to more than 10 points under their season scoring average. The Aggie defense induced Liberty to shoot a season-low 32 percent from the floor, including 1-for-12 from beyond the arc, after collecting 11 3-pointers in their previous game.
In the second half, Emily Frazier collected a 3-point play to help the Flames ride a 7-0 run to pull within four at 37-33 with 12:57 left in the game. Four minutes later, Amber Calvin made a steal on an inbound pass, and passed it behind her back to Nazario, who made the layup to give A&T a 48-39 lead with 8:14 left. The Flames closed to within four before Berry scored the next five points to give the Aggies an eight-point lead at 53-44. But Liberty didn't give up. The Flames went on an 8-0 run to pull within one with 2:41 remaining. Nazario then nailed a 3-pointer to give the Aggies more of a cushion at 56-52.
The game wasn't over yet, however. Preseason All-Big South player Devon Brown picked up the steal underneath the Aggie basket, and drove down to score. She was fouled by Nazario and made both free throws to make it a 58-56 game with 18 seconds remaining.
After senior center Nikia Gorham missed a free throw with 16 seconds left, the Flames got the rebound, but seconds later the Aggies defense forced Liberty's Sadalia Ellis into a turnover with 3.5 seconds remaining. Calvin hit two free throws to clinch the win. A&T picked up the win after a two-week layoff.
The Aggies also had a strong offensive performance against Liberty, as a season-high four players scored in double figures. Calvin, who went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first half, ended the game with a team-best 21 points.
