Lady Rattlers Blanks North Carolina A&T, 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Florida A&M moved their MEAC win streak to eight-games to remain unbeaten in conference play as the Lady Rattlers defeated North Carolina A&T, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-21), here Friday night at Alfred Lawson Center.

FAMU raises their record to 10-9 and 8-0 in MEAC play, North Carolina A&T fell to to 1-28, and 1-6 in conference play.

Both Pamela Barrera and Yeisha Arcia finished with a team high 11 kills to lead FAMU, while Maria Ceccarelli finished with 10.   Both Arcia and Karol Marquez led the Lady Rattlers in digs as they both finished with eight digs each, while Diana Gonzales dished out a match high 36 assists.

North Carolina A&T  was paced by Brooke Stamnes with eight kills, followed by   Andrea Evans with seven.  Chelsea Fox dished out a team high 25 assists, while Ashley Johnson led the Lady Aggies in digs with 14.

Delaware State Downed By Coppin State, 0-3

 

BALTIMORE- The woes continued Friday evening for Delaware State as they were swept, 3-0 (12-25, 20-25, 20-25), by Coppin State at the Physical Education Complex.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 5-18 overall and 2-7 in conference play.  The Eagles improved to 10-11 overall and 5-4 in the MEAC with their win.

Freshman Alena Jung led Del State with six kills on a .050 hitting percentage.  The outside hitter also added six digs, an assist and an ace.

Senior Bel Fakaosi collected 18 assists for the Hornets in addition to eight digs.

Junior Jessica Croucher led DSU with nine digs with three kills, one assist and two block assists.

As a team, the Hornets posted a hitting percentage of .066 (22 kills/16 errors/91 attempts).

CSU sophomore Ariel Richard tied a season-high 22 kills for the Eagles with a .594 hitting percentage.

Bianca Chatman added 12 kills and a .357 hitting percentage for the Eagles, while Gabrielle Otero had 14 digs and Nicole Malave added 10 digs.

Freshman Chelsee Sauni had 46 assists, four digs and two blocks for Coppin State.

NSU Wins 5th in a Row, Downs Howard 3-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Norfolk State won its fifth straight match as well as its ninth in the last 11 contests with a 3-1 victory over Howard Friday night at Burr Gymnasium.

The win kept the Spartans in second place in the MEAC Northern Division at 7-2. NSU also ran its overall record to 11-18 after defeating the Bison, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21.

The Spartans have now won five in a row for the first time since the start of the 1996 season and the first time in the Division I era. They are also now guaranteed just their second winning season in the MEAC in 16 years. Howard, on the other hand, remained winless on the year at 0-21 overall, 0-9 in the conference.

NSU got the win despite having a subpar game on the offensive side of the net. The Spartans hit just .074 for the match, with 31 attack errors, although they did hold Howard to a .107 attack percentage. Senior Charlotte Armstead was the only player from either team to reach double figures in kills with 10.

Senior Beatriz Ferreira had eight kills, while redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles had another solid match with 21 digs.

Assata Conway led the Bison with eight kills and six blocks. Howard had a 9-5 advantage in blocks.

North Carolina Central Sweeps Bethune-Cookman, 3-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Krysta Gardner posted a double-double of 16 kills and 12 digs and became Bethune-Cookman's all-time service ace leader Friday in the Lady Cats' 3-0 (25-18,25-21,29-27) loss to North Carolina Central in a MEAC southern division match in Moore Gym.

The senior from Ashburn, Va., had two services to give her a career total of 127, eclipsing the old mark of 126 held by Javanne Johnson. Gardner's double-double was her sixth of the season.

With ten digs, Jennifer Jimenez tied the school career mark of 852 held by Melissa Sanders.

Aria Cormier had seven kills for B-CU (4-25 overall, 4-4 MEAC), which was playing its first home game since Sept. 30. Destiny Hudson added four kills and eight kills, while setter Monica Lowe had 29 assists and seven digs.

Christine Anthony led North Carolina Central (7-19, 5-2) with 14 kills. Sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon tallied nine kills and six digs, freshman Marilyn Sherbondy had 12 digs, and sophomore Alice Genna totaled 38 assists.

MSU Drops Hard Fought Match To UMES, 3-1

BALTIMORE-Morgan State freshman Samantha Prescott tallied a career- and team-high 19 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Bears dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 18-25, 20-25) decision to the Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Friday evening in a MEAC North Division match at Hill Field House.

The loss marked the third straight for Morgan State (4-20, 3-7 MEAC) and was the 12th consecutive loss to the Lady Hawks. Morgan State now leads the all-time series, 36-18.

Prescott, who hit had a hitting percentage of .400, also added nine digs, falling shy of a double-double. Senior Ashley Johnson added eight kills and five digs and junior Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh recorded seven kills on seven attempts, eight digs and 37 assists on the evening. Her 37 assists give her 1,440 for her career, 16 shy of moving into fifth-place all-time at Morgan State.

Morgan State, who finished with a team hitting percentage of .156 with 48 kills, also got seven kills from freshman Arianna Hayden who also chipped in with five digs, while sophomore Nangeeshie Plaud finished with a match-high 12 digs to lead Morgan State, who held a 47-43 advantage over UMES in digs.

UMES (23-4, 9-0 MEAC) which totaled 50 kills for the match, did its damage offensively with just four players. Led by Saitaua Iosia's team-high 19 kills, Ndidi Ibe and Maline Vaitai added 12 and 11 kills, respectively for the Hawks, who extended their winning streak to nine matches. Victoria Williams collected the team's remaining eight kills, as the Lady Hawks recorded a hitting percentage of .252 for the match. Vaitai led the squad with 10 digs to record a double-double, while Jessica Vicic notched a match-high 44 assists.

The hosts held a 6.0-5.0 blocking advantage over UMES with Zuri Smith, Janelle Wilson and Chafeh leading the way with three blocks apiece. The Lady Hawks were led by Williams' four blocks and Ibe, who had three.
