SC State Defeats Jacksonville 68-45

ORANGEBURG, SC -South Carolina State outscored visiting Jacksonville 41-19 in the second half to register a 68-45 non-conference win Wednesday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

The victory was the third in a row for the Lady Bulldogs who improved to 4-1 on the season, the best start at the University for Coach Doug Robertson, who is in his fifth season.

Senior guard Tiara Knotts continued her hot shooting for SC State, tossing in 21 points on 8-13 shooting from the field, including 2-3 from three-point range. Knotts is averaging 15.6 points per game, but has scored at a 23.5 clip in her final two outings.

Fannie Goodwin came off the bench for 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in the contest for SC State, which also got eight points from Paris Alston and seven from Cabriel Duren.

The Dolphins were paced by Maggie Wilson with 14 points and Tracie Sneed with 13 in the loss. Wilson, Briona Brown and Jade Cargill all had six rebounds for Jacksonville, which fell to 3-3 on the season.

Coppin State Falls to Towson 58-55

TOWSON, Md. -- Senior Leola Spotwood scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but Towson defeated Coppin State 58-55 on Wednesday in the Towson Center. 

Ashle Craig added 10 points and three steals for the Eagles, while Jordan Swails and Kyra Coleman each had seven points.

Michaelle Peebles had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Towson.

George Washington Thumps Morgan State, 75-40

BALTIMORE-Megan Nipe scored a game-high 14 points and Danni Jackson and Tara Booker both added 11 points each to lead visiting George Washington to a 75-40 non-conference victory over host Morgan State on Wednesday evening at Hill Field House.

The victory by GW (4-2) ended a two-game losing skid to Morgan State over the past two seasons, while handing the Lady Bears their second consecutive home loss. Morgan State now leads the all-time series 4-3.

For Morgan State the loss was its largest defeat since a 37-point (37-74) loss at Hampton in 2010 and was the largest home loss since a 32-point loss last season also to Hampton. Non-conference wise, it was the largest loss to an opponent since a 50-point defeat at Wake Forest during the 2005-06 season.

The Lady Bears (3-4) were led by Tracey Carrington, who finished with a team-high eight points. Moneshia Davis and Dinah Jones each had six points.

George Washington finished the game shooting 48 percent (28-of-58) from the floor and shot 15-of-26 (57 percent) from the charity stripe. Morgan State hit just 18 shots out of 68 attempts for 26 percent from the floor and went 0-for-10 from beyond the three-point arch. Morgan State also went to the free throw line just six times, knocking down four for 66 percent.

The Lady Bears held a 44-40 rebounding advantage over GW with Amarah Williams leading the way with eight boards. Alauna Jackson and Carrington added six rebounds apiece. Sara Mostafa had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Colonials to go with her eight points.

The Colonials had 12 blocked shots on the evening with Anjaleace White recording a game-high five blocks and Mostafa totaling four.

Despite Second Half Surge Nccu Falls To Lady Seahawks, 59-45

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Despite an early second half surge bringing North Carolina Central within two points, the Lady Eagles fell to the Lady Seahawks from North Carolina at Wilmington, 59-45 in Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C., Nov. 28.

Redshirt senior Chasidy Williams lead NCCU, and all-scorers, with 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one block. Freshmen Amber Neely also contributed to the Lady Eagles offense, scoring 11 points, dishing out two assists and capturing one steal. 

UNCW was led by Kelva Atkins, Jessica Freeman and Karneshia Garrett. Atkins and Freeman contributed 15 and 13 points respectively while Garrett collected a game-high 18 rebounds. 

The Lady Seahawks as a team shot 46 percent from the field on 25-of-54 shooting, 22 percent from behind the arc, and 56 percent from the free-throw line, while collecting a total of 41 rebounds, 16 assists, seven steals and committing 17 turnovers.

Lady Rattlers Can't Contain Eagles In 88-71 Loss

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Florida A&M team outscored Southern Mississippi 46-44 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a 19 point first half deficit as the Golden Eagles defeated the Lady Rattlers 88-71, Wednesday evening at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (2-3) was paced by Jasmine Grice as she scored a team high 25 points, followed by Kimberly Sparkman with 13, while Patrice Collie tallied 12 round out the cast of the Lady Rattlers in double-figures.  Collie led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with five; while Andreya Lacy dished out a team high four assist.

USMU (3-2) was led by Tenecka Carey with a game high 39 points, followed by Jamierra Faulkner with a double-double in 14 points and 12 assists and Jerontay Clemons with 11 points and six rebounds.

FAMU finished the game shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62), while USM shot 52.3 percent (34-of-65).  The Golden Eagles held the rebounding margin over the Lady Rattlers, 41-35.

Kalu Scores' 1,000 Career Point in Loss To Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. - It was a tale of two halves in Starkville, Mississippi for the Savannah State women's basketball squad Wednesday night. After trading the lead seven times with Mississippi State in the opening half, the Lady Tigers fell 55-70 to the Lady Bulldogs, after struggling in the second half.

Savannah State's Erin Hogue opened the scoring, hitting two free-throws for a 2-0 SSU lead. The Lady Bulldogs answered, tying the game seconds later. Hogue scored 18 points in the game, hitting 10-of-13 free-throw attempts.

Ezinne Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 20 points, going 7-for-13 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity strip.

Kalu, a junior, is the first women's basketball player in Savannah State Division I history (since 2002-03) to reach the 1,000 career points mark. She led the team in her freshman year (2010-11) with 401 points, and again in her sophomore year (2011-12) with 529 points.

The Newark, New Jersey native entered Wednesday's match only eight points shy of the record. She scored six of those points in the first half of the game. At the 14:50 mark of the second half, Kalu dropped a jumper from just inside the arc for her 1,000th career point.

After six games in the current season, Kalu leads the team with 82 points, averaging 13.7 per game.

The Lady Tigers shot 36.7 percent from the floor and 67.0 percent from the free-throw line. Mississippi State shot at a 48.1 percent clip from the floor and 69.2 from the charity strip. SSU falls to 2-4 overall, while Mississippi State improves to 3-4.

Howard Defeats Loyola (Md.), 40-37   

WASHINGTON, D.C. - It was a fight to the finish, as Howard extended their three-game home-winning streak to three with a Wednesday, Nov. 28 nail-biting victory over Loyola (Md.), 40-37 in Washington, D.C., at Burr Gymnasium.

In the three-point win, redshirt junior Jerrelle Gorham tallied a season-best 12 points, as senior Nicole Deterville pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds.  Senior leading scorer Saadia Doyle scored a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds, while seniors Cheyenne Curley-Payne distributed seven assists, N. Deterville notched two blocks and Kara Smith stole two Loyola possessions.

Howard advances to 3-4 on the season to close-out the opening month of play.
