Bethune-Cookman Tops Florida Atlantic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lady Wildcats continued a great start at home on Friday, battling it out with Florida Atlantic for the 71-61 win in historic Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Led by Amanda Hairston and Terrenisha Hollis' 14 points apiece, the Lady Wildcats put in 40 points in the paint and controlled the glass, outrebound FAU 47-36.

Hairston collected her 14 on 70 percent shooting, while also grabbing seven rebounds to co-lead the team (with Sharnese Neal), a career-high five blocks, three steals and an assist.

Hollis also finished with six rebounds, five on the defensive glass, along with a pair of steals, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor.

The win makes it consecutive seasons opening the year 2-1, and the third time in the Vanessa Blair era.

North Carolina Defeats Iona

GREENSBORO - Amber Calvin came off the bench to score 19 points and dish out five assists to lead the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team to a 66-57 win over Iona at Corbett Sports Center Friday night.

The win gives A&T coach Tarrell Robinson his first career win. The Aggies (1-2) were able to avenge a 16-point loss to the Gaels from last season.

Iona also had trouble finding Calvin in its zone defense. Calvin took advantage by hitting a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Aggies a 51-44 advantage. Calvin's three leads to a 13-0 A&T run as they Aggies take 61-44 with less than eight minutes remaining. Juniors Tracy King and DeAndra Davis lead the way during the spurt as they score five points apiece. Tracy King finishes with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Gaels (2-1) close the lead to seven, 62-55, on a Cassidee Ranger 3-pointer with 1:38 remaining. But seconds later, Jessica Lyons found a wide open Nikia Gorham underneath the basket for a game-clinching layup.

Second Half Surge Keys SFC Win Over Lady Hornets

Brooklyn Hts., N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2012) --- Delaware State trailed by one point early in the second half, but could get no closer the rest of the way in a 69-50 loss to St. Francis this evening.

The Lady Hornets fell to 0-2 this season, while the Terriers are 2-0.

Tierra Hawkins recorded a double-double for Delaware State, tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds, each a game high. Hawkins has scored 45 points in DSU's two games this season (22.5 ppg).

Deanna Harmon added nine points and Jade Washington eight for the Lady Hornets.

Jessica Kaufman came off the bench to lead three St. Francis players in double figures with 13 points.

Florida A&M Falls to Stetson

DELAND, FL (Nov.16) - Florida A&M fought the Stetson Lady Hatters tough for the first half, keeping the game to a close 46-38 score. But, in the end the Hatters would pull away shooting 56.1 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point line to win by an 88-67 margin, at the Edmunds Center on the campus of Stetson University.

Jasmine Grice and Kimberly Sparkman paced FAMU in scoring in the half, pouring in 12 and 11 points respectively. Patrice Collie chipped in nine in the half. Grice would also lead the Lady Rattlers on the boards in the first half with six.

Behind Jama Sharp's 18 points and Victoria McGowan's 11, the Hatters also went 6-of-14 from three point range to extend their lead.

For the Lady Rattlers, Grice would end as the top scorer with 19, followed by Sparkman with 18 and Collie with 13. Collie pulled down 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.

FAMU shot 28.6 percent in the first half and 33.3 percent in the second. The team also went 9-29 from the three point line, scoring 31 percent.

Lady Pirates Take Down LSU In Home Opener

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton opened its 2012-13 home slate in style on Friday, defeating Louisiana State 67-58 in front of a raucous crowd at the HU Convocation Center.

It was Hampton's second straight win over an SEC school; the Lady Pirates defeated Mississippi State 56-48 on Monday in Starkville, Miss. It was also the program's second straight home win over an SEC school, as Hampton defeated Florida at the Convocation Center 69-54 on Dec. 10, 2010.

During his tenure at Hampton, head coach David Six is 3-2 against the SEC.

Senior forward Keiara Avant led the Lady Pirates (3-0) with 19 points and 10 rebounds - recording her third double-double of the season and her eighth in the last 12 games dating back to last season.

Junior forward Alyssa Bennett added 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting and nine rebounds, while junior guard Nicole Hamilton had a career-high 10 assists and four blocks to go along with nine points.

Senior guard Olivia Allen added a career-high eight points off the bench.

Hampton has forced all three opponents so far this season into at least 20 turnovers; opponents are averaging 24.0 turnovers a game against the Lady Pirates.

Hampton also made a season-high six 3-pointers and went a season-best 79.2 percent (19-for-24) from the free throw line.

LSU shot just 30.9 percent (17-for-55) from the floor.

Theresa Plaisance led LSU (1-1) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
