MEAC Volleyball Championship Day One

Match 1: Hampton 3, South Carolina State 0

BALTIMORE-
South Carolina State fell to Hampton, 3-0, in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship at the Physical Education Complex, on the campus of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.

Desire Waller, the 2012 MEAC Player of the Year, led South Carolina State with a match-high 18 kills.  She also recorded four digs with one block solo and one block assist in the match.  Senior, E. Paige Webb picked up 13 digs in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs closed out their season with a 9-15 overall record and 6-4 in the MEAC.

Vendula Strakova recorded 14 kills on 28 attacks for a .321 hitting percentage to lead the Lady Pirates (19-13). Sheileen Pagan had 16 digs in the victory.

Krista Kraskura, an All-MEAC First Team selection, added nine kills and just two errors in 21 attacks for a .333 hitting percentage, while also recording a team-high five digs on defensive effort.

The 2012 MEAC Volleyball Championship tournament continues on Friday afternoon with the defending MEAC champion Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks facing off against Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m. Florida A&M will take on Coppin State at 4 p.m., followed by Norfolk State versus North Carolina Central at 7 p.m.

Match 2: Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Bethune-Cookman 0

BALTIMORE-
The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball champion Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks advanced to the semifinal round of the MEAC volleyball championship with a 3-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman at the Physical Education Complex, on the campus of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.

Saitaua Iosia, the 2011 MEAC Rookie of the Year, led UMES with a match-high 14 kills on 25 attacks for a .440 hitting percentage. She also added nine digs.  Sophomore Victoria Williams added 10 kills with a .714 hitting percentage. The Lady Hawks improved to 26-5 and will meet Hampton in tomorrow's semifinal game at Noon.

Krysta Gardner led Bethune-Cookman with 13 kills.  Monica Lowe totaled 22 assists and a team-high six digs. The Lady Wildcats closed out their season with a 5-28 overall record.

The 2012 MEAC Volleyball Championship tournament continues on Friday afternoon with Florida A&M and Coppin State at 4 p.m. Norfolk State and North Carolina Central will close out the action at 7 p.m.

Match 3: Florida A&M 3, Coppin State 0

Florida A&M defeated Coppin State, 3-0 in the opening round of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball championship tournament Friday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State University.

Yeisha Arcia, an All-MEAC First Team selection, guided the Lady Rattlers to tomorrow's semifinal match with 16 kills on 27 attacks. Karol Marquez added 16 digs defensively. 

Ariel Richard was the top performer for Coppin State with nine kills. Gabrielle Otero led the Eagles with nine digs. Coppin State concluded their season with an 11-14 record.

The Lady Rattlers improved to 13-9 and will face the winner of the Norfolk State/North Carolina Central match tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Match 4: Norfolk State 3, North Carolina Central 2

BALTIMORE- North Carolina Central dropped a five-set match in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)  Volleyball Championship, to Norfolk State on Friday night at the at the Physical Education Complex on the campus of Coppin State University.

Christine Anthony, the 2012 MEAC Rookie of the Year, earned a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs.  Sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon posted 10 kills, eight digs and two blocks in the loss. Alice Genna posted 48 assists. The Eagles concluded their season with an 8-22 overall mark.

The Spartans (14-19) advanced and will face Florida A&M in tomorrow's semifinal at 3:30 p.m.

Three Norfolk State student-athletes recorded double-digit kill performances. Charlotte Armstead and Jessica Johnson each tallied 15, while Coralie Jarmea added 11.  Noelle Eagles led the defensive effort with 22 kills.
