Hassan Scores 1000th Point in SSU Victory

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Senior forward Rashad Hassan joined the 1,000 point club in Savannah State's 54-47 win over North Florida in Tiger Arena on November 14.

The Riverdale, Georgia native entered the season with 957 points.

Hassan scored 17 points in the Tigers season-opening win over Trinity Baptist on Nov. 9 and added 16 in a loss to Middle Tennessee on Nov. 13.

Needing just 10 points to get 1,000, Hassan scored 11 points in the come from behind win over the Ospreys.

Hassan went scoreless in the first half of the game as all his points came in the second period.

His layup with 9:09 left gave him 1,000 career points as well as the Tigers a 45-40 lead.

He went over the 1,000 point plateau with a free throw with 1:52 remaining to put SSU ahead 49-47.

Hassan now has 1,001 career points.

The MEAC Preseason Player of the Year entered the season with 418 career rebounds and after three games is 70 shy of reaching 500.

Hezekiah Powers Bulldogs over Warriors, 86-66

ORANGEBURG, SC- JUCO transfer Matthew Hezekiah recorded his third straight double-double with a team-high 22 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead South Carolina State to a , 86-66 victory over Webber International Thursday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial  Center.

Junior guard Adama "Louie" Adams added 17 points, while freshman Patrick Myers (6-2, 175) chipped in 16 points and six rebounds in the victory. The Bulldogs improve to 2-1 on the season.

The first-half was close throughout with SC State jumping out to a four point lead, on a layup by Adama Adams (6-1, 170) at the 9:21 mark. The Warriors rallied back to take the lead, 20-24 on back-to-back three-pointers by senior guards Tyler Auerbacher and  David Swan with 7:50 left in the half.

Senior guard Khalif Tombs tossed in a three-pointer, followed by a Adams basket to give the Bulldogs a one point lead, 29-28  with 5:27 left. Myers gave SC State their biggest lead of the first-half 11, 43-32 off a tip-in with 1:31 left.

NCCU GRINDS OUT 59-55 VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Clutch free throw shooting, solid defense, and Ray Willis's (Atlanta, Ga.) 20 points were just enough for North Carolina Central University to grind out a 59-55 victory over Southern University in the first contest of day two of the 2012 Global Sports Hoops Showcase inside Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo.

In the third meeting since 1941 between the Eagles and Jaguars, both teams struggled from the field early as Southern took the early lead at 7-4 through the first media timeout. 

NCCU missed four of its first five shots from the field yet only trailed 12-10 with 13:11 to go, when the Jags went on a 8-2 spurt to grab a 20-12 advantage with 9:03 left.

The Eagles responded as Willis scored seven consecutive points including a three-point play to cut the margin to one at 22-21, and the maroon and gray took the lead at 23-22 on an Emanuel Chapman (Raleigh, N.C.) jumper.

Five points became the largest lead for NCCU in the first half and the Eagles took that margin into the locker room with the score 33-28.

Coleman leads Wildcats to Win over New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - Adrien Coleman had a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Alex Smith scored 10 of his career-high 14 points in the second half as Bethune-Cookman rallied for a 71-65 road victory over New Orleans Thursday night.

Trailing 58-46 with 6:18 remaining, B-CU (1-2) scored 14 unanswered points to take a 60-58 lead on Ricky Johnson's three-pointer with 3:09 remaining.

New Orleans (1-2) regained the lead at 62-61 on two Lovell Cook free throws with 1:48 left, but Smith's dunk with 1:26 put the Wildcats ahead for good.  Paul Scotland (a career-high 11 points) added four points in the final 42 seconds.

Kevin Dukes had 12 points for B-CU, which posted its first non-conference road victory since a December 2008 win at Jacksonville. Smith had eight rebounds.
