UMBC Edges Coppin State in Overtime

BALTIMORE - Raven Harris scored 14 points including the go-ahead three-pointer with 2:32 remaining in overtime as UMBC defeated Coppin State 83-75 on Wednesday in the RAC Arena.

Harris, who was 5-of-6 from the floor, hit her only three-pointer of the game breaking a 74-74 deadlock and putting the Retrievers ahead to stay.

Ashley Lambert extended the lead to 79-74 with a layup with 1:27 to play before Ashle Craig made one of two free throw attempts for Coppin State to cut the margin to 79-75 with 55 seconds left.

Lambert converted one of two free throws to push the lead to 80-75 with 54 second remaining and Harris made three of four free throw attempts in the final 34 seconds to seal the victory for the Retrievers.

UMBC (2-1) was led by Lauren Chase who had 22 points and 10 assists, while Brittany Crowell had 19 points and 14 rebounds. The Retrievers had five players in double figures in scoring as Lambert had 12 points and Bria White added 10 points.

Coppin State (1-2) was led by junior Kyra Coleman who scored a career-high 24 points and also added nine rebounds, while senior Leola Spotwood added 19 points and 11 rebounds. Shawntae Payne scored 13 points and had four assists for the Eagles.

Spotwood scored six points and Coleman and Payne each had five points as Coppin State jumped out to an early 20-11 lead in the first half.

UMBC answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 20-19 with 8:09 to play in the first half.

After a basket by Coleman ended the run pushing the CSU lead to 22-19, Crowell capped a 5-0 UMBC run with a three-pointer that gave the Retrievers a 24-22 lead with 7:11 left in the opening period.

A three-point play by Ashle Craig, a basket by Jordan Swails and a three-pointer from Spotwood helped the Eagles regain the lead at 30-24 with 5:25 left in the half.

UMBC then closed the half on a 14-1 run to take a 38-31 lead into the intermission.

Coppin State then opened the second half on a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Payne that tied the score at 38-38 with 17:28 to play in the game.

After UMBC took the lead the Eagles regained the lead at 47-46 on a layup by Spotwood with 11:55 remaining in the second period.

After the teams traded baskets, Spotwood hit two free throws giving CSU a 53-50 lead with 9:48 left.

A jumper from Larrisa Carter, a layup by Craig and a free throw by Coleman gave Coppin State a 60-55 lead with 5:31 to play.

White put UMBC in front 66-65 with a three-pointer with 2:34 remaining, but Coleman made one of two free throws with 2:20 on the clock to tie the score at 66-66.

Chase hit two free throws with 1:46 to play putting UMBC back in front at 68-66, but Coleman answered with a layup to even the score at 68-68 with 1:30 left.

Crowell gave UMBC the lead again with two free throws with 1:06 left in regulation, but Coleman tied the score again with a jumper with 19 seconds left to knot the score at 70-70.

Chase missed a shot at the buzzer for UMBC forcing overtime.

Coleman gave Coppin State a 72-70 lead in overtime with a layup, but Lambert tied the score at 72-72 with a layup with 3:51 left in overtime.

A pair of free throws by Chase gave UMBC a 74-72 lead, but Jaleah Holsey answered for the Eagles with a layup to tie the score at 74-74.

Harris then converted the go-ahead three-point basket for the Retrievers giving UMBC the lead for good.
