Lady Pirates Emerge Victorious Over Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. -Hampton thwarted a late run by Mississippi State Monday night before ultimately escaping Humphrey Coliseum with a hard-fought 56-48 win.

The Lady Pirates (2-0) picked up their second-ever win over a school from the SEC; the program's first came in 2010 against Florida.

Senior forward Keiara Avant, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led the Lady Pirates with 19 points and 16 rebounds for her second straight double-double to open the season. Junior guard Nicole Hamilton and junior forward Alyssa Bennett each added 14 points.

Bennett added seven rebounds, while Hamilton also dished out a team-high five assists.

Defense and rebounding again carried the day for the Lady Pirates; Hampton held Mississippi State to 29.5 percent shooting (13-for-44) from the floor, while also forcing 23 Bulldog turnovers and turning those into 19 points.

The Lady Pirates held a 14-2 edge in fast-break points.

Hampton also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 44-29 - including a 21-10 advantage on the offensive glass. As a result, the Lady Pirates scored 15 second-chance points.

Turnovers Costly In Lady Eagles' 58-39 Loss To Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - North Carolina Central sophomore Montreshia Perry's 11 points was not enough to push the Lady Eagles past Coastal Carolina Monday night, falling 58-39 in the HTC Center in Conway, S.C.

Perry, a native of Colerian, N.C., scored a team-high 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting from the 3-point line and a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe, to go along with three rebounds and two assists.

Freshmen Tisha Dixon led the Lady Eagles on the board for the second straight contest, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, while fellow rookie, Amber Neely, led NCCU with four steals.

Coastal Carolina forced 22 turnovers, which proved to be costly for the Lady Eagles, who had trouble getting the ball through the net only shooting 24.9 percent from the field.

NCCU dropped to 0-2 on the season, while Costal Carolina improved to .500 at 1-1 on the year.

The Lady Eagles return to the court Friday Nov. 16, as they take on the Lady Camels of Campbell University at 5:15 p.m., in Buies Creek, N.C.

North Carolina A&T Falls to Nebraska-Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - The North Carolina A&T women's basketball team dropped their second straight game, falling to Omaha 58-44 at the Sapp Fieldhouse on Monday evening.

The Aggies (0-2) struggled again in getting inside the paint and scoring.  Robinson said that the Aggies weren't aggressive enough in driving to the basket during the game, and that made it difficult for A&T to get their offense rolling.

A&T shot just 19 percent in the second half, making just 6 of 31 shot attempts, which was a significant drop-off from the 48 percent the Aggies shot in the first half.

Preseason All-MEAC senior guard JaQuayla Berry led the Aggies in scoring  and on the boards with 12 points and nine rebounds, along with two steals in the contest.  Preseason All-Summit League player Frauendorfer finished the game with a team-best 15 points for Omaha.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Second half scoring droughts and untimely turnovers made the difference in taking Bethune-Cookman from a promising start in the opening half to a 14-point loss at the final whistle, in Monday's matchup with Jacksonville at Swisher Gymnasium.

Junior forward Amanda Hairston was solid from the free throw line, hitting six-of-eight, and played a physical game inside, notching five-of-six from the field along with a team-high nine rebounds. She finished with 16 points, a season high.

Jasmine Evans and Taylor each joined Hairston in double figures, with 11 and 10, respectively.
