Spartans Celebrate Senior Day with 3-1 Win over DSU
NORFOLK, Va. -Norfolk State honored its five seniors prior to the match with Delaware State on Sunday afternoon and then proceeded to tie the school's Division I record for wins with a 3-1 victory over the Hornets on Senior Day at Joseph Echols Hall.
The victory also boosted NSU's record to 13-19 overall, tying the 2010 team for the most wins in a season in the Division I era. The Spartans' conference record easily surpassed the previous best MEAC mark of 5-3 in 2010.
Appropriately on Senior Day, one of NSU's most prominent players over the last two decades again led the way, as senior Charlotte Armstead posted 13 kills on a .500 attack percentage. Fellow senior Beatriz Ferreira added 10 kills, while fifth-year senior Nicole Kessner handed out 25 assists.
NSU's other two seniors, Kristen Burt and Maatra Henderson, also got in on the action. Henderson added five digs and three kills, while Burt totaled five assists and three digs in the first set.
Jessica Croucher-Russell had a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs for Delaware State. The Spartans limited the Hornets to a .156 attack percentage and had the advantage in service aces, 11-6.

Lady Pirates Upend UMES For First Time Since 2005
HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton University beat conference rival Maryland Eastern Shore 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 26-24) in its regular season finale at Holland Hall.
It marked Hampton's first win over UMES since 2005 - and the first win over the Lady Hawks in the tenure of head coach Pedro Gonzalez. The Lady Pirates (18-13, 9-3 MEAC) also handed UMES its only conference loss of the season.
The Lady Pirates recorded the most wins in a single season since 2005, when they went 19-15. Hampton last won nine conference matches in 2000, when the Lady Pirates were 9-6 in league play.
The Lady Pirates hit .310 for the match, recording 59 kills and 19 errors in 129 total attacks. Hampton also held a 7-6 edge in service aces, while UMES was up 7-6 in blocks.
The Lady Hawks (25-5, 11-1 MEAC) hit .287 for the match, with 51 kills and 16 errors in 122 attacks.
Vendula Strakova registered a career-high 31 kills, marking the second time this season she's joined the "30-Kill Club." She hit a career-best .510 for the match, recording just six errors in 49 total attacks. Her 31 kills are a program record for most kills in a four-set match.
Krista Kraskura added nine kills, while Sonja Maksimovic had seven kills.
Bibiany Fonseca had 52 of Hampton's 54 assists, while junior Sheileen Pagan had a team-high 13 digs.
Ndidi Ibe led UMES with 17 kills, while Saitaua Iosia had 15 kills and Maline Vaitai had 11.
