Wake Forest Rallies to Defeat Coppin State
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-Senior Leola Spotwood scored 19 points and junior Kyra Coleman had 18 points, but Wake Forest overcame a five-point second-half deficit on its way to an 82-75 victory over Coppin State on Sunday in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Coppin State (1-1) took a 48-43 lead with 16:30 to play when Spotwood converted a layup, but the Deamon Decons answered with a 8-3 run to tie the score at 51-51 with 13:22 to play in the game.
Coppin State's Bria Harris knotted the score at 54-54 with a layup at the 10:45 mark of the second half.
Wake Forest (1-0) then took the lead for good on the strength of a 7-0 run highlighted by four points from Chelsea Douglas which pushed the lead to 62-55 with 8:08 to play.
A pair of free throws by Coleman trimmed the Wake Forest lead to 65-63 with 4:39 to play, but Lakevia Boykin answered with a three-pointer that extended the margin to 68-63 with 4:25 to play.
A three-point play from Larrisa Carter cut the WFU lead to 70-68 with 3:15 left, but the Deacs again answered with a three-pointer as Asia Williams connected to push the lead to 73-68 with 2:58 remaining.
After a layup by Mykala Walker increased the lead to 75-69, the Eagles got a three-pointer from Shawntae Payne and a layup from Carter to climb to within 75-74 with 1:23 left in the game.
Douglas connected on another three-pointer for Wake Forest that pushed the lead to 78-74 with 1:00 left.
Coleman made one of two free throw attempts to cut the lead to 78-75, but the Deamon Decons made all four of their free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the win.
Douglas finished with a game-high 23 points for Wake Forest, while Boykin added 17 points. Williams had 14 points and Sandra Garcia had 11 points and seven rebounds for WFU.
Payne added 16 points for Coppin State, while Carter added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Doyle Notches 36 Points In 72-61 Loss To No. 8 Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. -Howard senior Saadia Doyle put the Lady Bison offense on her shoulders as she tallied 36 points in HU's 72-61 loss to No. 8 Penn State in University Park, Pa., on Sunday.
Along with her team-high scoring outing, Doyle also led in rebounds with six. Redshirt junior Jerrell Gorham guided the mighty blue and white in assists and steals with four in each category and shared in the rebounding effort with six boards.
Off the 30 points HU scored in the second half, Doyle was responsible for 18, including eight consecutive points over four minutes of play.
In the last 20 minutes of action, PSU lead by as many as 19 points and maintained a double-figure lead until No. 8 Penn State secured its 72-61 season-opening win.
