Volleyball Recap: October 19

DSU Unable To Keep Up With MEAC-Leading UMES  

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The struggles continued Friday evening for Delaware State as the Hornets fell, 0-3 (23-25, 18-25, 19-25), to Maryland Eastern Shore at UMES' Hytche Athletic Center.

Junior Brooke Redmon led Del State with six kills and a .364 attack percentage.  Senior Bel Fakaosi posted 20 assists for the Hornets while sophomore Edarkis Branch collected seven digs and two aces.  Laisha Davis added two blocks for DSU.

Saitaua Iosia and Ndidi Ibe paved the way for the Hawks with 17 and 15 kills, respectively.  Ibe posted an astounding .500 attack percentage with just three errors.  Jessica Vicic tallied a game-high 33 assists.

NSU Avenges Earlier Loss, Downs Hampton, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. - Coming out firing on all cylinders, Norfolk State avenged a loss to Hampton earlier this season with a solid 3-0 victory over the Pirates Friday night at Joseph Echols Hall in the first of two Battles of the Bay this weekend.

The Spartans hit a very respectable .281 and played solid defense, keeping a powerful Hampton attack from pulling away most of the night. More importantly, the victory moved NSU into a tie with the Pirates in the MEAC Northern Division standings at 4-2.

NSU improved to 8-18 overall after winning, 25-19, 25-20, 29-27. The loss dropped Hampton to 13-12 overall..

The Spartans posted 51 digs and seven blocks, easily topping their normal production per set. Redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles had 18 of those digs, while sophomore Jasmin Flowers had a hand in six of the team's seven blocks.

Senior Charlotte Armstead and freshman Jessica Johnson each posted a team-high 11 kills, while senior Beatriz Ferreira added nine.

Vendula Strakova and Krista Kraskura led Hampton with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Kraskura also had a team-high 17 digs.

Eagles Open Second Half of MEAC Season With Loss

BALTIMORE -- Sophomore Ariel Richard recorded a match-high 18 kills, but Morgan State defeated Coppin State 25-23, 17-25, 25-13, 25-19 in a MEAC match on Friday in the Physical Education Complex.

The Bears avenged an earlier loss to Coppin State by posting a .276 hitting percentage, including .448 in the deciding set.

Morgan State (3-16, 3-3 MEAC) was led by Arianna Hayden who had 17 kills, five digs and four blocks. Janelle Wilson added nine kills, five blocks and a dig for the Bears.

Coppin State, which was attempting to establish a new school record for victories in a season, dropped to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The Eagles also received nine kills and three blocks from Kendra Ireigbe, while Kandace Thomas, Bianca Chatman and Cindy Okpegbue each had seven kills.

Gabrielle Otero added 24 digs, while Chelsee Sauni had 46 assists for Coppin State.
