NORFOLK, Va., October 1, 2012- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will promote breast cancer awareness on and off the field during the month of October. This is the MEAC's fifth year campaigning for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
During October, which is designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many organizations wear pink to bring awareness and share information and services available to prevent and treat the disease.
Throughout the month, MEAC student-athletes and coaches in men's and women's cross-country, volleyball and football will show their support by wearing the color pink.
During the MEAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships held on October 27th, 2012 in Princess Anne, Md., pink ribbons will be worn by coaches, while student-athletes will race wearing pink bibs. In addition, a breast cancer awareness page will be highlighted in MEAC Cross Country Championship souvenir book.
On the volleyball courts, MEAC coaches will also wear pink ribbons to show their support. Pink volleyballs may be used during matches. In previous years, many institutions have presented the pink match ball signed by players to a breast cancer survivor.
During football games on October 20, 25, and 27 of October, game officials will wear pink wristbands and ribbons and use pink whistles. Coaches will also wear pink ribbons to show their support during the month.
Public service announcements regarding breast cancer initiative will be done for all MEAC athletic events throughout the month.
On the conference website, www.MEACsports.com, a breast cancer memorial wall will be created to support awareness, education and empowerment for National Breast Cancer Month. Fans can also join the MEAC Supports Cancer Awareness Group on Facebook.
