Coppin State Rallies for 61-58 Win over NSU
NORFOLK, Va. - Coppin State rallied from a nine-point second half deficit and overcame a poor free throw shooting effort in a 61-58 victory over the Norfolk State Monday evening at Joseph Echols Hall.
The Eagles held NSU to just five points in the last nine minutes of play but let the Spartans hang around, thanks to an 11-of-25 effort from the charity stripe. Coppin State (12-10, 7-2 MEAC) missed on all four free throws in the final minute of play while up by just three, but NSU (8-12, 3-6) failed to capitalize on three last-minute possessions.
Sophomore Rachel Gordon had another solid game, leading the way with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and a career-high 21 rebounds, two days after posting her previous career high of 19 boards against Morgan State. Gordon tied the Division I record for rebounds in a game set by Lawanda Newman on March 3, 2003 against North Carolina A&T.
Junior Batavia Owens tallied nine points and eight rebounds, while junior Recca Trice handed out six assists. The Spartans connected on just 21-of-57 from the floor (36.8 percent) with 24 turnovers, although the Eagles only hit 23-of-59 (39.0 percent) with 17 turnovers. Thanks to Gordon's big day, NSU had a 45-38 edge on the boards.
Shawntae Payne led Coppin State with 17 points to go along with five assists, while Jeanine Manley and Kyra Coleman added 14 points each. Manley also had a team-high nine rebounds, and Ashle Craig posted seven assists and five steals.

Howard Downs Lady Bulldogs 69-46
ORANGEBURG, SC - Cheyenne Curley-Payne tossed in 20 points and Saadia Doyle added 19 and a game-high 11 rebounds to lift Howard to a 69-46 MEAC win over host South Carolina State Monday.
Kara Smith was also in double figures with 14 points for the visitors, who improved to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in the MEAC.
SC State, which dropped its third consecutive contest, was led by Tracey Flowers with 11 points and six rebounds. Tiara Knotts added nine points and seven assists in the loss, which dropped Coach Doug Robertson's team to 8-11 and 4-4 in MEAC play.
Howard, which led by just one, 27-26, at the half, outscored the Lady Bulldogs 42-20 in the second stanza. The Lady Bison connected on 46 percent of their shots from the field to only 35 percent for SC State and enjoyed a 42-24 edge on the boards against the host.

Hawks Come Through In The Cluth In Win Over N.C. Central
DURHAM, N.C. - Junior forward Chelsea Sanders drained two clutch free-throws with 30 seconds left in the game to deliver the final knockout blow for the Hawks as Maryland Eastern Shore posted a 54-46 victory over the Eagles before 822 at the McDougal-McClendon Gymnasium. The victory ensures UMES' hold on fifth-place in the MEAC standings.
The free-throws by Sanders capped a sensational night, as she notched a career-high 25 points and tied a game-high with eight rebounds. Senior forward Adobi Agbasi continued her push towards breaking UMES' all-time blocks record as she recorded five in the game to move to within 46 of the crown. UMES (7-12, 4-3 MEAC) benefitted from a 47 percent clip from the field in the second-half.
UMES forced 18 turnovers in the half and were led by Sanders' 12 points and six rebounds by Stewart. The Hawks held a 24 to 18 advantage in rebounds, 11 of which were on the offensive side of the ball.
NCCU was paced by the effort of Chasidy Williams, who registered a team-high 17 points and had seven rebounds. Kabrina Truesdale totaled 15 points, while Houston had 10 points and six steals. The Eagles shot just 6-of-26 from the field in the second half.

Lady Pirates Rebound With Win Over Morgan State
HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton rebounded in a big way on Monday, upending Morgan State 74-60 at the HU Convocation Center in front of a national ESPNU audience.
The Lady Pirates (16-4, 8-1 MEAC) have not lost back-to-back games since November of last season.
Senior guard Jericka Jenkins led the Lady Pirates with 25 points on 8-for-16 shooting and eight assists, while senior forward Melanie Warner added a season-high 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting.
Senior guard Choicetta McMillian pulled down a team- and career-high 12 rebounds, while junior forward Keiara Avant came off the bench to add seven points and 10 rebounds.
Warner scored the first seven points for Hampton, including a 3-pointer at the 17:01 mark that put the Lady Pirates up 7-3.
Morgan State (6-15, 3-5 MEAC) shot 40.0 percent (24-for-60) from the floor and was held to just eight field goals in the first half. The Lady Bears went 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) from behind the arc and made four of their six free throws.
Omara Parker led Morgan State with 20 points, while DeKeisha Mathis added 16 points and Keirah Hicks poured in 12.

Bristow Nabs Double Double; DSU Falters Late At N.C. A&T
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Tasia Bristow recorded the first double double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds and redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins collected 15 points and nine rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Delaware State University women's basketball team was outscored, 9-3, in the final two minutes en route to a 49-57 loss at North Carolina A&T Monday evening.
Bristow bested a previous career-high of six rebounds, set Saturday at North Carolina Central.
NCAT's Tiffanie Adair led all scorers with 19 points and also had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Adriana Nazario recorded 11 points for the Lady Aggies.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 4-16 on the season and 1-6 in the MEAC while NCAT improves to 9-12 overall and 4-4.
