Coppin State Upsets First-Place Hampton in Overtime

HAMPTON, Va. -- Crystal Whittington and Larrisa Carter each scored 15 points and Jeanine Manley scored five of her 12 points in overtime as Coppin State defeated first-place Hampton 69-66 on Saturday in the Hampton Convocation Center.

After sending the game into overtime by making one of two free throws with 43 seconds left in regulation, Manley scored five of the Eagles first seven points in the extra period as Coppin State jumped out to a 64-59 lead with 2:28 to play in overtime.

Coppin State (11-10, 6-2 MEAC) limited the Pirates to just 27.2 percent shooting in handing Hampton its first conference loss of the season. The Eagles also outscored Hampton 28-13 from the free throw line.

The victory extended the Eagles current winning streak to four straight and nine of the last 10 games.

Hampton (15-4, 7-1 MEAC) was led by Choicetta McMillian who scored a game-high 25 points. Jerika Jenkins added 17 points and Melanie Warner added 10 points for the Pirates.

Lady Hornets Snap Losing Streak; Grab First MEAC Win

DURHAM, N.C. - Numerous players tallied career-highs in various categories as the Delaware State University women's basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak and picked up their first MEAC victory of the season in a 66-55 win over North Carolina Central University Saturday afternoon at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins led the way with her fourth double double of the season.  Hawkins posted 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the victory.  Her previous high of 12 was set on Nov. 15 against Wesley.

After collecting a career-high 10 rebounds last Monday, freshman Keyanna Tate tallied 12 this afternoon in addition to six points.

Sophomore Tarshaye' White hit two 3-pointers to amass a career-high six points.

The Lady Hornets held their own block party as they recorded eight, the highest of the season.  Redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe and sophomore Deanna Harmon each tallied career-highs with three and two, respectively.  Hawkins also nabbed two for Del State.

Alesha Jenkins tallied her second double-figure high of the season and of her career in maroon and gray with 14 points, junior Chasidy Williams dropped 11 points in the contest.  Williams led in boards with eight, as Jenkins and senior Blaire Houston pulled down seven rebounds apiece.

Free Throw Shooting Keys Morgan State's 75-69 Win over NSU

NORFOLK, Va. - Morgan State connected on 23-of-27 from the charity stripe, including on all eight shots in the last minute of play, and overcame a huge disparity in rebounding to down the Norfolk State women's basketball team, 75-69, Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Bears (6-14, 3-4 MEAC) hit 20-of-23 from the foul line in the second half alone and held NSU (8-11, 3-5) to just 34.2 percent shooting for the game. The Spartans held a 54-36 edge on the boards, including a 26-6 advantage in offensive rebounds, but were unable to overcome their 15-of-28 shooting clip from the charity stripe.

Senior Whitney Long led all players with 18 points and now stands just 13 away from reaching 1,000 for her career. Junior Batavia Owens and sophomore Rachel Gordon each tallied double doubles, with Owens contributing 13 points and 16 rebounds and Gordon tallying 16 points and 19 boards.

Sophomore Rae Corbo reached double digits in scoring for the sixth straight game with 13, while Long had a game-high five steals. NSU connected on just 25-of-73 from the floor for the game, including 3-of-12 from the 3-point line.

Omara Parker led Morgan State with 17 points, while Chyress Lockhart and Dekeisha Mathis added 16 and 15, respectively.

Moneshia Davis added 13 points for the Bears, while Amarah Williams led them with eight rebounds to go along with six points. Morgan State sank 23-of-56 for the game (41.1 percent).

Howard Bison Roll Over Tigers with 13-point Victory

Savannah, Ga.--- Saadia Doyle and Tamoria Holmes finished with a combined total of 35 points to lead the Howard Women's basketball team (14-7 overall, 6-2 in MEAC) to a 64-51 win over the Savannah State (8-12, 2-6) in Tiger Arena on Jan. 28.

Doyle recorded her ninth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and 10 boards. Holmes tallied 13 points in 40 minutes of action. Nicole Deterville ended the match with a career-high 13 rebounds and tied Zykia Brown with eight points.

   

Jasmine Kirkland paced the Tigers with 15 points in 32 minutes of action. Ezinne Kalu chipped in with 11 points in 37 minutes.

North Carolina A&T Women End Four-Game Losing Streak

North Carolina A&T defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 53-50 Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action despite starting three first-year players. The Aggies played without first-team All-MEAC performer JaQuayla Berry and starter Tracy King missed another game with a knee injury. Two-time MEAC Rookie of the Week Tiffanie Adair stepped into the star role again by scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

But it was redshirt sophomore Amber Calvin who had the biggest shot. Calvin hit a wide open 3-pointer in the corner with 2:26 remaining in the game to give the Aggies a 51-48 lead. UMES cut it to one on a Kwinnyata Mercer layup. But two Calvin free throws clinched the win for A&T (8-12, 3-4). UMES (6-12, 3-3) was led by Chelsea Sanders who had 13 points.

Lady Rattlers Take First Place With 65-51 Win Over B-CU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Jan.28) - The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers took sole possession of first place in the MEAC with a 65-51 victory over the B-CU Lady Wildcats in front of a crowd of 1,980 in an electric Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium. With an overtime loss to Coppin State, the Hampton Lady Pirates dropped out of a tie with the Lady Rattlers for the top spot in the conference.

Tameka McKelton played solidly for the Lady Rattlers, leading them in scoring with 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting, including 1-5 from three-point range. Jasmine Grice poured in 16 gritty points for the Lady Rattlers on 6-for-9 shooting from the field, including 2-for-3 from the three-point arch. Grice also grabbed four rebounds and played tough defensively. Antonia Bennett played the role of distributor for most of the evening. With a defense obviously designed to stop her, Bennett still scored 12 points on 5-for-14 shooting, while pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out five assists.

Jasmine Elum and Jalisa Isaac scored 10 points each to lead the Lady Wildcats. They would be the only B-CU players to score in double figures. Demetria Frank scored nine points, while grabbing nine rebounds.
