MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

NORFOLK, Va., January 23, 2012 - Norfolk State's Kyle O'Quinn was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Ricky Johnson of Bethune-Cookman was named the Rookie of the Week for the second straight week while Amin Stevens of Florida A&M earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

O'Quinn (C, 6-10, 240, Sr., Jamaica, N.Y.) tied his career high with 19 rebounds along with 24 points in a win over Coppin State.  He recorded his 13th double-double of the season with a 22 point, 11 rebound performance against Hampton as the Spartans extended its conference record to 7-0.  For the week O'Quinn averaged 23.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks while shooting 73-percent from the floor.

Johnson (G, 5-9, 160, Fr., Akron, Ohio) scored 12 points, connecting on 10-of-10 free-throws in the Wildcats' 68-62 victory against Savannah State.  For the week Johnson totaled 17 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists while shooting 50-percent from the field in a pair of conference wins.

Stevens (G, 6-6, 215, Jr., Roswell, Ga.) recorded 28 total rebounds with four blocks and three assists in two conference victories over South Carolina State and Maryland Eastern Shore.  Against SCSU Stevens notched 12 boards, with 19 points, along with two steals in 32 minutes of play.  He followed that performance by hauling down 16 rebounds, blocking four baskets and stealing one pass in a victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. 

Other Top Performances

Glenn Andrews (Howard) - scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds with two assists and two steals against North Carolina Central.

Kevin Dukes (B-CU) - scored back-to-back double digit performances with 15 points in a win over Savannah State and 19 points in a victory over Delaware State. 

Michael Harper (CSU) - averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals to lead the Eagles to a 1-1 mark in conference play last week.

Tyler Hines (UMES) - posted a double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds in a loss to Florida A&M. 

Jeremy Ingram (NCCU) - recorded career highs of 27 points and eight rebounds with three assists, two steals and one block in a 69-53 win over Howard.

Reggie Lewis (FAMU) - averaged 15.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in two conference victories last week for the Rattlers.

Marques Oliver (DSU) - shot 9-of-12 from the field to lead Delaware State with 19 points, six rebounds, four blocks and four assists against Bethune-Cookman.

Darrion Pellum (Hampton) - averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in losses to Morgan State and Norfolk State.

Derric Rudolph (SSU) - scored 24 points while setting a school record with eight 3-pointers in a 83-53 win over South Carolina State.

Jyles Smith (SSU) - finished with 12 points and recorded a total of nine blocked shots in two games last week for the Tigers.

Dominique Sutton (NCCU) - posted a total of 35 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in conference games against Howard and Coppin State.

Antonio Williams (CSU) - averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in games against Norfolk State and N.C. Central last week.
