MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

 

Coppin State's Logan Wiens was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.  Ricky Johnson of Bethune-Cookman was named Rookie of the Week while Antonio Williams, also of Coppin State, earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Wiens (F, 6-7, 230, Sr., Merced, Calif.) recorded back-to-back 23 point scoring games as he led the Coppin State Eagles to a pair of conference wins last week.  He shot 73-percent from the field, including 62 percent from 3-point range, and 1.000 percent from the free-throw line.  Against South Carolina State Wiens scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting, with three rebounds, three blocks and two assists.  He then tied his career-high in Coppin State's 83-66 win over Hampton.  In the win he made 7-of-11 shots and was perfect from the field (6-of-6) from the charity stripe.

Johnson (G, 5-9, 160, Fr., Akron, Ohio) totaled 19 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in two conference games last week for the Wildcats.  In a 82-76 win over South Carolina State Johnson recorded 11 points, shooting 60-percent from the floor and 67-percent from 3-point range, with two rebounds, and one assist in 24 minutes of play. 

Williams (F, 6-6, 200, Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) grabbed a career-high and conference season best 21 rebounds, fifth best in Coppin State history, in an 83-66 win over Hampton.  He tallied 18 of his 25 boards on the defensive end of the flour.  He totaled 25 rebounds, one block and one steal in the team's two victories.  Offensively he scored a combined 18 points with four assists.

Other Top Performances

Rashad Hassan (SSU) tallied 32 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in victories over Morgan State and Florida A&M. 

Garrius Holloman (B-CU) recorded a total 26 points, 17 rebounds, six steals, four assists, and one block to help the Wildcats earn a 1-1 mark last week in conference play.

DeWayne Jackson (MSU) averaged 28.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks in two conference loses against Savannah State and Norfolk State last week.

Avery Moore (FAMU) scored 22 points, with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals in a overtime loss to N.C. A&T. 

Marques Oliver (DSU) posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds with four blocks and two assists in a 60-63 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore.

Kyle O'Quinn (NSU) recorded 25 points, 12 rebounds, and tied his career high seven blocks in a 90-89 victory over Morgan State.

Adrian Powell (NCAT) recorded a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds, with two assists and one steal in an 85-82 win over Florida A&M.

Ronald Spencer (UMES) scored 17 points and shot 80-percent from the field with six rebounds and one block in a 63-60 overtime win over Delaware State.

Amin Stevens (FAMU) recorded back-to-back double doubles with 12 points and 10 rebounds against Savannah State and 15 points and 11 rebounds against N.C. A&T.

Dominique Sutton (NCCU) recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds including three assists and one steal against Bethune-Cookman.

Mike Tuitt (Hampton) came off the bench and scored 40 total points, shooting 66-percent from the floor, in a pair of road games for the Pirates. 

Ray Willis (NCCU) scored 21 points with seven rebounds, four assists and a career-high five steals in a 69-64 win over Bethune-Cookman.
