Spartans Outlast Morgan State in 2 OTs, Win Division I-Record 6th Straight
BALTIMORE, Md. - Behind monster nights by seniors Kyle O'Quinn and Marcos Tamares and enough key stops down the stretch, the Norfolk State men's basketball team outlasted Morgan State 90-89 in double overtime for its sixth straight win on Saturday evening at Hill Field House.
O'Quinn recorded 25 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high-tying seven blocks while Tamares poured in a career-high 22 points for the Spartans, who improved to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in MEAC play. NSU's current six-game winning streak is its best since the 1995-96 season, and the 13-5 start is the program's best since 1996-97, the Spartans' final year in Division II.
The 5-0 MEAC start, meanwhile, matches the 2002-03 team for the best since the team moved to Division I in 1997-98.
NSU overcame a 33-point performance from the Bears' DeWayne Jackson, rallying from 17 down in the second half to force overtime. NSU then had to weather a last-second shot from Bears' guard Larry Bastfield at the final horn to escape Hill Field House with its third consecutive win over the Bears (3-11, 1-2).
Morgan State broke open a 22-all tie midway through the first half with 10 straight points. Jackson, who scored 20 first-half points, hit two buckets during the run and Blake Bozeman capped it with a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 32-22 lead. MSU hit six 3-pointers in the first half and shot 55 percent from the floor to take a 43-36 advantage into the locker room.
