WASHINGTON, D.C. - Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University in her hometown of Durham, N.C., has been selected for induction into the George Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame.
A four-year standout for the Colonials volleyball program, Wicker-McCree will join seven other inductees in the Class of 2012 for the hall of fame induction ceremony on Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C. (For more details, visit GWsports.com)
After graduating from C.E. Jordan High School in Durham, N.C., where she was a three-sport student-athlete (volleyball, basketball, track & field) and played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, Wicker-McCree spent four seasons (1985-88) on the GW volleyball team. She was a three-year starter and a team captain as a senior.
During her four seasons, the Colonials were a combined 97-51, including a 56-19 record in her first two seasons and a second place finish in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament in 1986.
As an underclassman at C.E. Jordan, Cinnamon Bowser followed Wicker-McCree's high school career, then spent the 1988 season as her volleyball teammate at GW. "Ingrid was committed to GW volleyball and to her teammates," said Bowser. "Through her incredible work ethic, she modeled what it meant to be a team player."
After graduating from George Washington University in 1989 with a degree in criminal justice, Wicker-McCree went to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she played professional volleyball for one season.
She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women's volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994.
Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women's volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school's first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team.
After 10 years (1998-2008) of overseeing the internal operations of the NCCU Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs, Wicker-McCree joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system when she was named to her current post in 2008.
She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league's history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA's Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07.
In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006.
In addition to her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, Wicker-McCree earned a master's degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991 and completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008.
On April 20, 2010, Wicker-McCree was presented with the Outstanding Alumnus Award from North Carolina State University's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.
Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia, Quinton and Sydney.
