SECOND-HALF LADY EAGLE OFFENSIVE SURGE NOT ENOUGH IN 54-64 LOSS TO BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DURHAM, N.C.  - In spite of outscoring the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman 31-20 in the second-half of play and hitting a 15-5 run in the half, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University could not outlast B-CU and fell 54-64 on Monday, Jan. 9 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Chasidy Williams, who finished the night with 25 points, pulled down six rebounds and stole six Lady Wildcat possessions.  NCCU freshman Montreshia Perry, who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe and 2-of-4 from the long range, achieved her first double-figure outing as a Lady Eagle with 12 points.  Sophomore Tenika Neely circulated four assists, as fellow classmate Tiffany Gary grabbed six boards.

The maroon and gray found themselves in a first-half deficient due to 18 turnovers, the in-the-paint offense effort of B-CU's Demetria Frank and long-range efforts of Jasmine Elum, who led the Lady Wildcats with 21 points, netting 4-of-7 from the behind the arc and sinking 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Along with Elum's double-figure outing, Frank and Cleniece Roberts dropped 11 points apiece.  Frank lobbed four assists and snatched six steals, as Jalisa Isaac blocked two shots.

Doyle Leads Howard To Win Over Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va.-Saadia Doyle poured in a game-high 25 points and Tamoria Holmes and Zykia Brown each contributed 18 to lead Howard to a 73-50 win over Norfolk State in a MEAC women's game at Echols Hall.

Doyle hit on 10 of 18 from the field to lead the Lady Bison (11-6 overall, 3-1), who won their ninth in the last 10.  Holmes and got most of their points from the transition game and the charity stripe where shot a perfect 15 for 15.

Junior guard Cheyenne Curley-Payne had one of her best floor games of the season, dishing out 11 assists with only three turnovers.

The Spartans (7-8 overall, 2-2 in the MEAC) were led by Whitney Long and Rae Corbo tallied 14 and 12, respectively and Rachel Gordon, who just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

SC State Women Fall to Coppin State 57-39

ORANGEBURG, SC -South Carolina State was looking to close out a perfect three-game home stand Monday night against Coppin State but were unable to as the visiting Lady Eagles held Coach Doug Robertson's team to 26.7% shooting from the floor in grabbing a 57-39 MEAC victory.

Chrystal Whittington had 12 points and matched that total on the boards to lead the Lady Eagles. Leola Spotwood and Jeanine Manley added 11 points each in the win, which lifted Coppin to 7-9 and 2-1 in the MEAC.

The Lady Bulldogs, who did not have a single player reach double-digit scoring, were led by Trinese Fox off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds. Paris Alston added eight points and six boards, while Tracey Flowers and Tiara Knotts contributed six points each in the loss.

SC State, which had its modest two-game win streak snapped, fell to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the league. Robertson's team had won four of five before Monday's setback.

Coppin State Head Coach Derek Brown, who is in his 13th season as the Eagles head coach, raised his career record to 200-166 with the victory. He has led CSU to three NCAA Tournament berths and two WNIT berths in his 13 years.

Florida A&M Defeats North Carolina A&T, 70-68

GREENSBORO-It came down to the last shot and last possession against Florida A&M on Monday night, and the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team put the ball into the hands of clutch shooter guard Amber Calvin with four seconds on the clock.  

The Aggies got the ball on their side of the court with 11 seconds left.  After dribbling and working to help get Calvin open, freshman Jessica Lyons passed the ball to Calvin who, took aim and jumped, but her shot went wide of its mark.  Sophomore Tiffanie Adair made a grab for the rebound, but FAMU forward Qiana Donald came up with the ball as the clock expired, leaving the Rattlers victorious with a 70-68 final score.

The Aggies (7-9, 2-1) tied the game at 56-56 on a pair of free throws from sophomore Tracy King, who ended the game with a team-high 17 points, six assists and four steals, with 8:28 left in the contest.  The Rattlers took a four point lead before Lyons made a pair of free throws after being fouled by guard Kimberly Sparkman to make it a 62-60 game with 3:49 left.  The Rattlers took a six-point lead following a pair of three-pointers from Antonia Bennett, who had 25 points and 11 boards, and Jasmine Grice, who ended with 19.  The last four points the Aggies made in the contest were free throws.  The loss was the first in conference play this season for the Aggies.

Juniors Nikia Gorham and JaQuayla Berry each performed well for the Aggies, collecting a team-high eight rebounds apiece.  Gorham had 14 points and Berry posted 12 in the contest.
