Five of Hampton University's athletic programs will be recognized by the Hampton City Council on tonight, as part of the council's "Spotlight on Citizens" program.
The school's men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, sailing and women's golf programs will be recognized for their accomplishments over the 2010-11 school year.
Both basketball teams won the MEAC Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while the Lady Pirates also won the MEAC regular-season title this past season and wound up the No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament - the best seeding for a MEAC school in the history of the NCAA's 64-team format.
The Lady Pirates cross country and indoor track & field teams won MEAC titles in 2010-11, while the sailing program, under the direction of third-year head coach Alessandro Ambrosi, won four regattas - the most ever in one season.
The Lady Pirates golf program also won the MEAC Golf Showcase last April.
Legendary tennis coach Dr. Robert Screen will also be recognized for being named to the Black Tennis Hall of Fame back in August and the Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 as part of the inaugural class.
The ceremony will take place on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the 8th floor of the City Council Building.
