Hampton captured the team championship in the Virginia Union University Invitational, which was held at Bryant Park on Friday.
The Pirates, who won their first cross country meet under head coach Steven Lewis, finished with 29 points, finishing six points ahead of Virginia State. Meet host Virginia Union came in third with 70 points, while Washington Adventist was fourth with 78 points.
Junior Xavier Fraction paced the Pirates, finishing second overall with a time of 29:45.00 over the 8K course. Three of the five Hampton runners finished in the top five, with four of the five coming in the top 10.
Sophomore Je'Von Hutchison was third after running a 30:05.00, while sophomore Jaleel Rogers posted a time of 30:12.00 to come in fifth.
Freshman Edose Idabin came in 10th with a 32:17.00, and freshman Evan Williams ran a 32:22.00 to finish 11th.
Chris Henry of Virginia State won the individual crown with a 28:36.00.
The Hampton women's cross country team also competed on Friday, finishing second in the Towson Invitational held at Oregon Ridge Park in Hunt Valley, Md. with 76 points. Meet host Towson won the team championship with 22 points.
Sophomore Nichelle Harris was the only Lady Pirate to finish in the top 10, coming in either after completing the 5K course in 19:36.84.
Junior Teshika Rivers ran a 19:54.23 to finish 13th, while sophomore Devyn Thompson came in 17th after posting a time of 20:27.29. Sophomore Alaine Tate ran a 20:47.98 to finish 19th.
Junior Shaquanda Gainey ran a 21:00.14 to finish 22nd, while sophomore Cydney Robinson came in 23rd with a season-best time of 21:00.81.
Sophomore Marressa Pinnock came in 53rd with a 22:55.37.
