Eagles Drop 3-0 Decision on Road to St. Francis (Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. -- Janka Schmitt had five kills and five blocks and Ariel Richard added six kills, but Coppin State dropped a 25-13, 25-15, 25-21 non-conference decision to St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday in DeGol Arena.

Coppin State (3-9) struggled to get its offense untracked and hit only .015 for the match, while St. Francis posted a .288 hitting percentage.

The Eagles did outblock the Red Flash 6.5-3.0, but had only 18 kills for the match. St. Francis also recorded 10 service aces.

Amanda Zahumensky led St. Francis with nine kills, while Elizabeth Williams added seven kills.

St. Francis jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set, but the Eagles rallied to cut the lead to 11-8 by scoring three consecutive points.

The Red Flash scored the final six points of the set to claim the 25-13 win.

St. Francis took an early 4-0 lead in the second set before the Eagles rallied to within 8-6. The Red Flash stretched the lead to 11-6 and Coppin State could get no closer than four points during the remainder of the set.

The third set was competitive from start to finish, but St. Francis used a late run to clinch the set and the match.
