Charlotte Sweeps Morgan State 3-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 10, 2011)-Bianca Rouse finished with a match-high 11 kills, Sheri Davis notched 24 assists and Christina Drake recorded a match-high 11 digs to lead host Charlotte to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-13) sweep of Morgan State on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match during the Hilton 49er Invitational.  

Erin Cox and Nikita Wickham each totaled five kills to lead the Lady Bears (2-7). Cox added a team-high six digs, while Natalie Chafeh finished with 17 assists. 

In the third and final set Charlotte used a 7-0 run to take a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The host 49ers held a 17-7 advantage, before Morgan State went on its largest run of the entire match (4-0) to pull within 17-11. Charlotte then closed out with a 7-1 spurt, including six straight to defeat the Lady Bears 25-13.

Charlotte finished the match with a hitting percentage of .429, while Morgan State was held to .069.

Coppin State VB Splits on Final Day of Providence Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Christina Epps broke the school record for hitting percentage in a match in Coppin State's 3-0 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) on the final day of the Providence Friar Volleyball Classic on Saturday.

Epps posted a hitting percentage of .769 in the Eagles 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.). Epps had 10 kills in 13 attempts with no hitting errors to better the previous school record of .700 held by Regina Nolan.

With the victory, Coppin State earned a split of its final two matches in the tournament as it lost to Providence 25-15, 28-26, 25-12 in its opening match of the day.

Against St. Francis (N.Y.), Ariel Richard recorded 15 kills while Epps added 10 kills.

Senior Salena Weekly had five kills and six blocks, while Kristine Bindule had 37 assists.

Richard had seven kills against Providence, while Epps and Vanity Massey each had six kills.

NSU Storms Back to Down YSU, 3-2

BALTIMORE- Down two sets to none, the Norfolk State volleyball team stormed back against Youngstown State, including a dramatic fifth set win, for the 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament at UMBC.

Looking for their first win of the season, the Spartans looked to be headed for the loss after the Penguins won the first and second sets, 28-26, 25-20. NSU took command after that, though, winning the next two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20 to force the fifth and deciding set.

Youngstown State nearly pulled out the win, going up by a 14-12 score in that last set before NSU survived to win in extra points, 17-15. The Spartans improved to 1-4 on the year, while the Penguins fell to 1-10.

NSU held the advantage in the stats department, with the duo of junior Charlotte Armstead freshman Adriana Ramos tallying 20 kills each. Armstead hit .533, posting 20 kills and just four errors on 30 swings, in the match. Junior Kristen Burt continued to have a great weekend as well, posting 50 assists, the fourth-highest single-match total in NSU history.

Sophomore Noelle Eagles had a match-high 17 digs, while junior Beatriz Ferreira added 13 kills. The Spartans hit .252 as a team with 63 kills, and held Youngstown State to 56 total kills and a .168 hitting percentage. NSU also had a 51-32 advantage in digs.

Junior Ashley Scott had seven blocks, as NSU held a 12-10 advantage in blocks over the Penguins. Armstead added six blocks, and senior Jasmine Frazier contributed five kills and four blocks.

The Penguins were led by Missy Hundelt with 19 kills and Jackie Carlisle and Alexis Egler with 13 each. Casey D'Ambrose totaled 49 assists, while Erika West had a team-high 10 digs.

SC State Women's Volleyball Team Goes 0-2 on the Day

Jacksonville, Fla.- SC State went 0-2 on day two of tournament play.  The Lady Bulldogs participated in the Best Western & Springhill Suites Tournaments which were hosted by North Florida and Jacksonville, respectively.

In its first match of the day, SC State (4-6) fell to Presbyterian, 3-1, (22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 20-25).  The Lady Bulldogs started the match slow but eventually picked up its intensity midway through the first set.  After falling in Set One SC State played with intensity for the remainder of the match.  The Lady Bulldogs displayed tenacity throughout the remaining sets winning Set Two to tie the match at one set apiece.  The Lady Bulldogs could not get over the hump dropping Sets Three and Four and eventually the match, 3-1.

Desiree Waller continued to play solid for SC State as she recorded her second double-double of the season, 14 kills-12 digs.  Brendell Studnicka picked up 12 digs while Bria Brimmer put up 33 set assists for the Lady Bulldogs in the match.

Presbyterian had three players to record double-digit kills led by Carolina Cann with 15.  Presley Mabrey contributed 14 and Kelly Berryman put down 10 kills in the match.  Ashtin Frank put up 56 set assists and Mary Trimpe picked up 13 digs as the Blue Hose improved to 2-5 on the season.

In its final match of the weekend SC State fell to Jacksonville University, 3-1, (12-25, 11-25, 27-25, 25-20).  The Lady Bulldogs began the match very sluggish as they were held to a combined 23 points heading into the 10 minute intermission between games two and three.

SC State began Set Three much more aggressive staying within three points of Jacksonville and enjoying a late one point at 16-15.  Jacksonville remained poised going on a 3-0 run to regain the lead at 16-15.  The Lady Bulldog would not be outdone as they once again tied the score at 21-21.  The teams then begin to exchange points before SC State captured Set Three, 27-25 to force a fourth set. The teams continued to exchange points to start the Set Four with neither team taking more than a four point lead in the set.  Jacksonville managed to take control of the set late, ending the set on a 5-3 run to take Set Four, 25-20 and the match, 3-1.

Desiree Waller recorded her second double-double on the day with 14 kills-11 digs.  Waller also put down five block assists.  Shabree Roberson contributed eight kills with five total blocks and Bria Brimmer put up 33 set assists in the loss.

Jacksonville had three players to record double-digit kills led by Alliya Drzewiecki with 14.  Kylie Jacob and Nadia Booker recorded 11 kills each.  Kendall Courtney put up 48 set assists and Ashley August picked up 18 digs in the win.

Hawks Fall To Holy Cross, Shutout Harvard To Conclude Bryant Invite

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - After being defeated in a competitive match against Holy Cross 3-0 (25-27, 23-25, 20-25) in the morning, UMES returned to the Chace Athletic Center and dominated Harvard 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) to split on the day.  On the season, UMES goes to 3-4.

UMES finishes the Bryant Invitational with a 2-1 record, tying the best tournament record with defeated opponent Harvard.  Bryant and Holy Cross each finished 1-2.

An early 4-0 run to start the first game by Holy Cross was countered by UMES taking five of the next six points, two coming off service aces by Maline Vaitai and Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa for a 5-5 tie score.  Each side continued to go on runs, with a late 3-0 run giving the Hawks a 23-22 lead.  But the Crusaders took five of the next seven to edge out the Hawks 27-25 for a first set win.

UMES started the second set 3-1 with the Crusaders following up winning eight of nine points for a 9-4 Holy Cross lead.  With the Crusaders leading 17-13, the Hawks put together a 4-0 run, including a pair of kills from Vaitai, to tie the score at 17.  Though they kept it close, the Hawks could not get the lead, falling 25-23 to go down 2-0 in sets.

The Hawks got out to a good start in the third set, getting up 6-3 to begin with two kills from Saitaua Iosia.  Holy Cross took the lead with seven points in eight chances, which was countered by a UMES 4-0 run to put the Hawks up 11-10.  The score would go back and forth, until UMES trailed 21-20.  The Crusaders finished with a 4-0 run to take the set 25-20 and a match victory 3-0.

Returning for the late match against Harvard, UMES broke out immediately, taking eight of the first 11 points, capped by a third kill by Vaitai.  The Crimson did not record a kill until the 22nd point against UMES.  The Hawks built a nine point lead at 20-11 and took the first set 25-18.

Game number started differently, with an early 3-0 run by Harvard countered by five straight points won by the Hawks.  The Crimson built back their lead 15-12 later in the set.  UMES then took control with a 5-0 run, including three aces by Vaitai, sparking the Hawks to win 13 of 17 points to take the second set 25-19 and take a 2-0 match lead.

Neither side gained a strong edge early in the third game.  With the score UMES 11 and Harvard 10, including five kills in that span by Iosia, the Hawks went on a 5-0 run, followed shortly thereafter by a 7-0 run to go up 24-12.  The maroon and grey finished the set 25-16 for their first shutout match of the season.  UMES ended the match with a hitting percentage of .309 to Harvard's .010.

Lady Wildcats Earn Share Of Clarion Classic Tournament Title

DeLAND, Fla. - Krysta Gardner's 28 kills were two shy of the Bethune-Cookman single-match record and Jennifer Jimenez' 25 digs came within three of that mark during Saturday's 3-1 (27-25,18-25, 25-23 25-22) victory over Wofford in the Clarion Classic.

After coming close in five set losses to Jacksonville and Eastern Kentucky and a loss to Stetson Friday, the Lady Wildcats (4-6) got that first non-conference victory of the season. With Wofford beating host Stetson in the tournament's final game, the Lady Wildcats found themselves in a three-way tie for tournament champions with a 2-1 record.

With setter Alexis Bliese done for the season after suffering an injury Friday, Raphael and B-CU had to scrap their 6-2 alignment and go to a 5-1.

Gardner's 28 kills (she also had 14 digs) followed a 21 kill night against Stetson Friday. The school record is Racquel McZeal's 30 set way back in 1993.

She and Janeen Davis (15 kills, 13 digs) were named to the all-tournament team.

DSU Sweeps Quinnipiac For First Win Of Season

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Led by senior Elisa Herrmann and sophomore Jessica Croucher and their combined 20 kills, Delaware State earned their first victory of the season Saturday evening as they swept Quinnipiac, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) to wrap up the Hartford/Quinnipiac Invitational.  Earlier in the day, Hartford defeated the Hornets, 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 10-25).

Del State (1-7) started set one of the Quinnipiac (1-8) match with a 4-0 lead.  With a kill from Brittanie Robinson, the Bobcats took the 14-11 advantage before the Hornets fought back and went up, 19-15.  DSU would go up 23-20 before a kill from sophomore Brooke Redmon and a bad set from QU's Olivia Grattan gave the Hornets a set one win.

In set two, Quinnipiac took a 14-10 lead before a 9-0 run from DSU put the Hornets on top, 19-14.  The run included four kills from Croucher and two from freshman Theresa Schieder.  The Bobcats would come back and tie things at 23-23, but blocks from junior Laisha Davis, Bel Fakaosi and Herrmann gave the Hornets a 2-0 match advantage.

Neither team took a large lead in game three as the Hornets and Bobcats exchanged points throughout nearly the entire set.  Del State took a 22-20 lead with two kills from Davis and one from Herrmann.  QU was able to bring things to 24-23, but a kill from Redmon sealed the victory for the Hornets.

Senior Sonja Banicevic finished the match with 22 digs while Schieder contributed 11 of her own.  Fakaosi collected 32 assists on the day and posted a .344 assist percentage.  Croucher led the game with a .409 (10 kills/22 total attacks/one error) attack percentage.

In the first game of the day for Delaware State, Fakaosi recorded 16 assists and Banicevic posted 10 digs.  The Hornets recorded a .062 attack percentage in the 3-0 loss to Hartford.
