Hornets Fall To La Salle And Navy

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - On the first day of the Hartford/Quinnipiac Invitational, Delaware State found themselves with a pair of losses after falling, 3-0 (9-25, 18-25, 16-25) to La Salle Friday afternoon and 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25) to Navy in the evening.

In the first set, Del State held a 7-6 lead before La Salle rattled off 15 straight points to take the  21-7 advantage over the Hornets.  A kill from sophomore Jessica Croucher brought DSU within 21-9 before sophomore Rachel Finkbeiner gave the Explorers the 25-9 set win with a kill.

The second set was more competitive from DSU's end, but La Salle still took an early 15-7 lead.  The Hornets got within three at 16-13 with a kill and service ace from Croucher and a kill from senior Elisa Herrmann to force a La Salle timeout.  The Explorers came out of the timeout and cruised to a 25-18 set victory.

The Hornets held the Explorers at a 7-7 tie in the third set before La Salle built lengthy runs, including a 7-1 run to seal the set and match at 25-16.

Del State battled Navy until the end as the teams posted tie scores 41 times and the lead changed hands on 20 occasions.

The Hornets held a 16-13 lead with a kill by Croucher before the Mids took a six point swing and went up, 19-16.  Kills by Herrmann and junior Laisha Davis tied things at 20-20 before Navy closed things out on a 4-0 run.

Del State was up, 18-15, before the Mids took a timeout and went on a 5-0 run.  The Hornets fought back and took a 23-22 lead off of a service error from Christy Rapp.  DSU closed things out at 25-22 for a set two victory.

In the third set, the Hornets led for the majority of the game, including a set-high four-point differential at 15-11.  A kill from Croucher gave DSU a 19-16 lead and then another lead at 22-20 and 23-22.  The Mids outlasted the Hornets however and took a 25-23 win.

Set four was the same story, with the teams battling things out until the end.  The Hornets built a 23-19 lead, but Navy finished the set with a 6-0 run to take the win.

Furman Sweeps Morgan State 3-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 9, 2011)-Morgan State's Ashley Johnson notched a match-high 12 kills, but it wasn't enough, as Furman defeated Morgan State 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-15) in the opening match of the Hilton University 49er Invitational on Friday afternoon at Halton Arena.

The loss was the sixth straight for the Lady Bears, who fell to 2-6 on the season. Simone Durham added six kills and Erin Cox led Morgan State in digs, tying a match-high with nine. Jourdan Lemons finished the evening with a match-high 23 assists in a losing effort.

Furman (4-3) was led by Ambrester Chandler, who tallied 10 kills and had seven digs. Shaffer Alexis added nine kills and Kirby Kelly finished with a team-high 14 assists.

In the opening set, Furman used runs of 6-0 and 6-1 to jump out to a 14-4 lead and closed out the match with a 9-3 spurt to take a 25-9 victory. The Paladins would finish with 14 kills to Morgan's six.

The Lady Bears fell behind 8-5 in the second set, before going on a mini 4-0 spurt to take a brief 9-8 lead. The Paladins used a 6-1 run to go in front 14-10, then put together a 7-2 run to end the set for a 25-16 win.

Morgan State faced an 8-3 deficit in Set 3 and would get as close as 10-14. But Furman put to rest any chances of a Morgan comeback with an 8-1 run to take a commanding 22-11 cushion. The Lady Bears would hang around, scoring four of the next five points, before falling 25-15.

The Paladins finished the match with a hitting percentage of .393, while Morgan State hit for just .068. Furman's Christina Dorismond recorded three blocks to help the Paladins to a 3-2 advantage in blocks over Morgan State.

SC State Falls to North Florida in Women's Volleyball

Jacksonville, Fla.- SC State displayed lots hustle and tenacity at times but fell just short dropping a non-conference match to North Florida (UNF), 3-0, (21-25, 19-25, 22-25), in women's volleyball.  The match, which is a part of the joint tournament between UNF and Jacksonville, was contested at the UNF Arena.

UNF jumped out to an early 9-6 lead in Set One.  The Ospreys went up by as many as nine, 15-6, before SC State picked up its offensive intensity.  The Lady Bulldogs went on two runs, a 7-4 to pull within five at 13-20 and then an 8-3 run to close the gap to three, 20-23 before falling in Set One, 25-21.

SC State started Set Two very aggressive jumping out to an early 11-8 lead and forcing UNF into a timeout.  After being down for most of the set, UNF picked up its intensity as they went on a 6-2 run to take a 14-13 lead.  The Ospreys never relinquished its lead winning Set Two, 25-19.

UNF started Set Three with a 6-2 lead.  SC State quickly regrouped going on a 5-2 run to close the gap to 8-7.  The teams then exchanged points for the rest of the set before the Ospreys won Set Three, 25-22 and the match 3-0.

Sophomore Desiree Waller led all attackers with 12 kills and redshirt-junior Shabree Roberson added seven to lead the SC State.  Roberson and Waller also led the team in blocks with six and four, respectively.  Senior Brimmer put up 30 set assists and senior Brendell Studnicka and junior E. Paige Webb picked up 10 digs apiece in the loss.

Hawks Victorious Against Tournament Host Bryant 3-1

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - After falling in the first set to the Bulldogs, UMES rallied back to win the next three games to defeat tournament host Bryant 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18).  The Hawks begin the Bryant Invitational 1-0 and improve to 2-3 on the season, while Bryant falls to 2-5.

The Bulldogs began with an early 7-3 lead in the first game.  UMES came back to within one by winning four of the next five points, including an ace by Zoe Bowens , to make it 8-7.  With the score 10-8 in favor of the home team, Bryant went on a 6-0 run and taking nine of ten points to pull away and take the first set 25-16.

The Hawks came back in a big way in the second set, winning seven of the first nine points, with the first three UMES points coming from kills from Saitaua Iosia.  When a 4-0 run by Bryant made the score 8-7 in favor of the Hawks, UMES countered with a 7-0 run, including three more kills by Iosia.  UMES led by a much as nine and took the second set 25-17 to tie the match.

Early in game three, Bryant took a four point lead 9-5 off a 5-0 run.  The Hawks cut the lead to two off a 3-0 run, including a kills from Victoria Williams and Maline Vaitai , to make it 16-14 Bryant.  Trailing 22-19 late, UMES came back to take six of the final seven points, starting with kills from Iosia, Bowens and Williams, and ending with a solo block and block assist from Ndidi Ibe to steal the third set 25-23 and go up 2-1 in match play.

UMES wasted no time in the fourth set, taking a 11-4 lead with a pair of kills each from Iosia, Ibe and Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa.  Dating back to the previous set, the Hawks won 17 of 22 points at this point.  They built their lead to 20-12, withstanding a late comeback attempt from Bryant, which put together a 4-0 run.  UMES finished strong with five of the final seven points to take the fourth set 25-18 and win the match.

Coppin State Falls to Lafayette in Volleyball

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Freshman Gabrielle Otero set a Coppin State school record with 32 digs, but the Eagles suffered a heartbreaking 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-12 loss to Lafayette on Friday at the Providence Friar Volleyball Classic.

Otero easily topped the previous record of 27 held by Danyel Davis and Sepiuta Tonga. Otero has now reached double figures in digs in six of the Eagles nine matches on the season.

Coppin State, which fell to 2-7 on the season, also received 14 kills and 17 digs from freshman Ariel Richard and 14 kills and 14 digs from senior Vanity Massey.

The Eagles recorded 90 digs for the match, which ranks second in Coppin State history. The Eagles had 93 digs against Niagara during the 2005 season.

It was a painful loss for Coppin State as it watched Lafayette storm back from an 0-2 deficit to win the match.

The Eagles appeared in complete control after winning the first set 25-23 and the second set 25-18. Lafayette (4-2) then rallied to win the third set 25-19, the fourth set 25-18 and the fifth and deciding set 15-12.
