DSU's Richardson Leads DSU to 3rd Place Finish at DSU Invite

SMYRNA, Del. - In their second race of the season, Delaware State's women's cross country team finished third overall and were led by junior Dashera Richardson as the Hornets hosted the DSU Invitational Saturday morning at the DSU Outreach and Research Farm.

The Del State men finished fifth overall on the day and were led by senior Donte' Holmes and his seventh place time of 17:11.22.

Richardson finished the 5k with a time of 21:03.15, an average mile of 6:46.6.

Maryland Eastern Shore swept the meet, finishing first on both the men's and women's sides.   UMES' Basil Melek placed first on the day with a time of 15:34.27 while Coppin State's Irene Cherubet finished first on the women's side with a time of 19:55.82.

Graduate student Jessica Harrison was second for DSU and 16th overall with her time of 23:28.42 while freshman Ashley Robinson and sophomore Ketsia Dornevil were 19th and 20th with respective times of 23:#5.53 and 24:08.25.

Senior Tracey Fan Fan finished in a time of 24:12.14, which was good for 22nd place.  Also recording points for the Hornets were freshman Shalaya Sidney and senior Kristen Johnson. Sidney finished 25th in a time of 24:26.12 while Johnson was 28th in a time of 25:17.46.

In the men's 5k, junior Kevaughn Laviea finished 17th overall in 18:35.35 and freshman Brandon Barnes was 20th in 18:44.48.  Freshman Chuka Elue finished in 19:40.40, good for 26th, while senior Tariq Devore was 28th in 19:51.90.

Juniors Edward Hurley was 38th in 22:44.95 and Eric Smith was 43rd in 27:56.41 to round out the scoring for Del State.

Maryland Eastern Shore Sweeps At Delaware State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -Maryland Eastern Shore's Basil Melek takes top spot in Delaware State Open Saturday, while Eunice Jones took second for the women. The Hawks swept the Open for the second time in two seasons. Melek finished in a time of 15:34.27 for the men, Jones finished in 19:57.12.

Zavior Brown finished fourth for the Hawks with a time of 16:33.89. With Basil and Brown finishing in the top five, UMES had four runners to finish in the top 15. Shadrick Maritim placed 13th with a time of 17:38.94, while Codjo Gbedo finished just shy of nine seconds later in 14th place at 17:49.42.

Donohue Williams finished with an 18:38.55 18th place finish. Alonzo Jarmen and Shaquille Turner finished their day in 23rd and 27th place, respectively, while running times of 19:14.42 and 19:41.52.

The men's team scored 49 total points, seven points better than Morgan State University. Saturday marked the second year in a row that UMES has swept the Delaware State Open.

Jones, Hana Jiraskova, Cynthia Anais, and Melina Gallas all finished in the top 15 Saturday. Jiraskova took 6th place with a time of 21:22.94 while Anais (21:51.95) and Gallas (22:17.92) finished 7th and 8th respectively.

Jennell Wade rounded out the top 25 for the Hawks finishing 23rd in 24:16.89. Emilie Ducados finished one position out of the top 25 with her time of 24:27.41.
