SC State Goes 0-2 on Day Two of the Big Orange Bash

Clemson, S.C.-SC State went 0-2 on day two of the Big Orange Bash.  The tournament, which concluded today, was hosted by Clemson.  Sophomore Desiree Waller was named to the All-Tournament Team.

In its first game of the day, SC State (0-3) fell to Loyola (Md.), 0-3, (24-26, 22-25, 21-25).  Shabree Roberson had an outstanding match as she put down nine kills with eight total blocks (2 solo-6 block assists), three digs and one service ace.  Desiree Waller contributed seven kills with 13 digs and Bria Brimmer put up 30 set assists in the match.  Paige Webb and Brendell Studnicka each picked up 14 digs in the loss.

Loyola (Md.) had two players to record double-digit kills as Nicole Sarby and Tina Catanach put down 11 a piece. Lauren Andersen recorded a double-double with 27 set assists and 10 digs.

In its final match of the tournament SC State fell to Clemson, 0-3, (10-25, 13-25, 19-25).  After scoring just 23 combined points in Sets 1 and 2, SC State did would not be discouraged.  After a 10 minute intermission, the Lady Bulldogs displayed lots of hustle in set three exchanging points with Clemson using a series of mini runs throughout the set.  The two teams exchanged the lead three times before Clemson managed to pull away and take Set Three 25-19.  Desiree Waller had another good all around match as she put down seven kills with one service ace and two block assists.  Paige Webb and Shabree Roberson each recorded four kills while Bria Brimmer put up 17 assists in the loss.

Clemson was led by Adeley Sandra with 11 kills.  Hannah Brenner and Kamryn Sherman recorded double-digit assists with 18 and 14 respectively.  Cansu Ozdemir had seven digs as the Lady Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season.

Georgia hands Lady Rattlers second loss of the season, 3-0

ATHENS, Ga. (Aug. 27) - Florida A&M dropped their second match of the 2011 Hotel Indigo Bulldog Invitational as they fell to the University of Georgia in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-11), here Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.

FAMU (0-2) was paced by Marija Jovanovic with a team high eight kills, followed by Katherine Huanec with six.  Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattlers in assists with 22, while Joanie Del Castillo led the team in digs with seven.

In the first set, FAMU fell to UGA 25-23.  Then would drop the second set 25-21 and the Bulldogs would win the match as they defeated the Lady Rattlers 25-11.

The Lady Rattlers finished with 28 kills, whereas the Bulldogs tallied 43.

UGA (2-0) was led by Kathleen Luft as she recorded a game high 12 kills, followed by Brittany Northcutt and Briana Bahr with eight kills each.  Kathleen Gates led the Bulldogs in assists with a game high 34, while Allison Summers finished with a game high 13 digs.

NCCU Volleyball Concludes Annual Tournament Without A Win

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central struggled to find a match win on its home court Saturday, Aug. 27, as they concluded the fifth annual Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament 0-3.  Falling in three sets to Elon (25-16, 25-17, 25-14), in four sets to Florida Gulf Coast (15-25, 25-12, 25-13, 28-26) and in five sets to Hampton (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 15-5).

The Eagles began Saturday's competition with a 9:00 a.m. match against Elon, the defending Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament champions.  The Phoenix beat NCCU in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14.

As a unit, NCCU finished with 22 kills, 20 assists, three service aces, 19 digs and one team block.

Elon found offensive leadership from Chanelle Smith.  The outside hitter turned 24 attempts into 13 kills with only three errors.

Although, the Eagles did not walk away with the win, their four-set match displayed their ability to adjust to difficult circumstances and play as a team.  Florida Gulf Coast earned its second win of the tournament in four sets, defeating NCCU, 15-25, 25-12, 25-13, 28-26.

Collectively, NCCU amassed 43 kills, 37 assists, five service aces, 32 digs and two team blocks.

The highlight of the NCCU playing schedule occurred during set three of tournament, as the Eagles battle their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent as a full MEAC and Division I member.

After a five-set fight to the finish, Hampton defeated NCCU, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 15-5.

The mighty maroon put away 50 of 117 attempts on the night, dug 38 Hampton attacks and tallied 10 team blocks.

Mianna Armstrong and Sheileen Pagan led Hampton with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.  Sonja Maksimovic and Petra Parros finished with nine kills apiece. 

Lihi Elkayam circulated 27 assists, while Armstrong amassed 10 digs.  Parros assisted on four blocks.

Lady Rattlers Drops Final Match Of Bulldog Invitational To Liberty, 3-0

ATHENS, Ga. ( Aug. 27)  - Liberty handed the Florida A&M Volleyball team their third straight loss in the 2011 Indigo Bulldog Invitational, 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-22)here Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.

Maria Jovanovic was the only Lady Rattler to tally double-digit kills as she finished with a team 10 kills.  Diana Gonzales dished a team high 29 assists, while Karol Marquez finished with a team high 13 digs.

FAMU (0-3) finished with 37 kills, while Liberty (1-2) tallied a game high 47 kills.  In the first set, Liberty out hit the FAMU as Liberty finished the set with 13 kills to the Lady Rattlers' eight.  The Lady Rattlers and Flames would be dead even in the second (16-16) and the third set (13-13).

The Flames were paced by Ansley Gebben and Lillie Happel  as they both finish with double-digit kills.  Happel led Liberty with a game high 13 kills, while Gebben finished with 11.  Jady Craycraft led the Fames in assists with 30, while Kelly Haseman led the team in digs with 14.

Chafeh Earns MVP Honors at La Salle Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Aug. 27, 2011)-Morgan State sophomore setter Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh was named to the 2011 La Salle Invitational All-Tournament team and earned tournament MVP honors on Saturday following the conclusion of the Saturday morning's final matches. The all-tournament team was based on voting by the head coaches.

A native of Fontana, Calif., Chafeh totaled 109 assists, 22 digs, 14 kills, five blocks and a service ace in three matches played. She tallied a career-high 47 assists in a five-set win over Providence to help Morgan State to its first 2-0 start since the 1999 season, just a few hours after recording a previous career-high 31 assists in the opener against Saint Peter's.

Canisius captured the team title by going 3-0 in an abbreviated tournament format, due to the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Irene. Morgan State, which played all three of their matches Friday evening, took second at 2-1, while Providence followed with a 2-2 mark after back-to-back wins early Saturday morning. Host La Salle placed fourth with a 1-2 record, while Saint Peter's was 0-3 for the weekend.

LADY PIRATES PICK UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON

DURHAM, N.C. -Hampton split a pair of matches on Saturday in the Hilton RTP/North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

The Lady Pirates (1-2) defeated NCCU 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 15-5) in evening action after Campbell beat Hampton 3-2 (15-25, 25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 15-7) in the morning. Hampton has now won four straight matches against NCCU.

Hampton led the first set 10-9 before NCCU answered with seven unanswered points to take a 15-10 lead. The Lady Pirates responded with five straight points, tying the set at 15-15 on an Armstrong kill. The score tied for more times before NCCU squeaked out the 25-23 win.

Hampton hit .231 (49 kills, 21 errors in 121 attacks) against NCCU, including a team-best .625 in the fifth set - thanks to five kills and no errors in eight attacks. The Lady Pirates also hit .250 (14 kills, six errors in 32 attacks) in the third set.

NCCU, which held a 12-10 edge in service aces, hit .205 (50 kills, 26 errors in 117 attacks) as a team - including a team-best .348 (10 kills, two errors in 23 attacks) in the fourth set.

Armstrong led the Lady Pirates with 13 kills and 10 digs on defense, recording her second double-double of the day. She hit .274 against NCCU, recording just four errors in 33 chances. Pagan added 10 kills, seven digs and a team-high three service aces.

In the first set against Campbell, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 4-1 lead, before Campbell fought back to within 7-6. The Lady Pirates then answered with a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 lead. Pagan recorded a kill later in the set to put the Lady Pirates up 23-12.

The second set began as a back-and-forth affair, and the two teams were tied 8-8 before Campbell went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. Campbell would take control of the set, winning 25-18 before also taking the third set 25-19.

Campbell jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the fourth set, but the Lady Pirates went on a 7-1 run to take an 8-7 lead. A later 4-0 spurt put Hampton up 19-15. The Lady Pirates would end the set scoring seven unanswered points to win 25-17.

Hampton hit .213 (54 kills, 25 errors in 136 attacks) as a team, compared to a .241 hitting percentage for Campbell - thanks to 55 kills and 21 errors in 141 total attacks. The Lady Pirates, who also held a 9-7 edge in service aces, hit a team-best .364 (16 kills, four errors in 33 attacks) in the fourth set.
