Lady Pirates Drop Season Opener To Elon

DURHAM, N.C. -Hampton lost its first match of the season on Friday, as Elon defeated the Lady Pirates 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-9) during the RTP Hilton/North Carolina Central Tournament at the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Elon jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, before the Lady Pirates answered with a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 8-7. There were six ties in the first set before Hampton took its first lead, 21-20 on a kill by sophomore Ioana Kalfinova.

Elon tied the match again on the following serve, but a Phoenix service error gave the Lady Pirates a 22-21 lead. The score was tied two more times, before Traci Stewart recorded a kill to give Elon the 25-23 win in the first set.

Hampton responded by jumping out to a 5-2 lead, thanks in part to aces from senior Lihi Elkayam and sophomore Sheileen Pagan, before Elon answered with a 10-2 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Lady Pirates battled back to cut Elon's lead to 16-14, before the Phoenix closed the set with a 9-2 run.

Elon jumped to a 6-1 lead to open the third set, before holding the Lady Pirates at bay.

The Lady Pirates (0-1) hit .152 as a team (27 kills, 15 errors in 79 total attacks. They opened the match by hitting .371 as a team in the first set, recording 16 kills and just t here errors in 35 attacks.

Elon (1-0) hit .430 as a team, with 39 kills and just five errors in 79 attacks. The Phoenix had a .667 hitting percentage (13 kills, one error in 18 attacks) in the third set, to go along with a .438 hitting percentage (14 kills, no errors in 32 attacks) in the first set.

B-CU Volleyball Splits Opening Day Matches

Citadel 3, Bethune-Cookman 1
Bethune-Cookman 3, Savannah State 0

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After dropping a 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25 15) setback to host The Citadel, the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats rallied for a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-18) sweep of Savannah State Friday afternoon at McAlister Fieldhouse.

B-CU committed 33 attack errors against the Citadel, but dropped that number to 22 against Savannah State. Junior Krysta Gardner had 12 errors in the opener, but reduced that four in the nightcap as she finished with 15 kills in the victory.

Co-captain Janeen Davis had a solid overall day, registering an 8-kill, 6-dig total against the Citadel and following it with an 8-7 effort in the second match.

Jennifer Jimenez paced the Lady Wildcat defense with 29 digs on the day. Among the newcomers, freshman Krysta Peter stood out with 14 kills.

Lady Rattlers Fall To Kansas, 3-0

ATHENS, Ga. ( Aug. 26) - Florida A&M fell to Kansas in three sets, 3-0(25-22, 25-23, 25-20) in their first match of the 2011 Hotel Indigo Bulldog Invitational at the Ramsey Center.

FAMU (0-1) was paced by Katherine Huanec as she tallied a game high 11 kills, followed by Maria Ceccarelli with seven.  Diana Gonzales led the Lady Rattlers in assists with 19, while Karol Marquez finished with a team 16 digs.

Kansas defeated FAMU in straight set as they won the first set 25-22.  The Lady Rattlers would battle back in the second set, but would come as they dropped the set 25-23.  Kansas would win the match as the defeated the Lady Rattlers 25-20 in the third set and final set.

Kansas (1-0) was led by Allison Mayfield as collected a game high 15 kills, behind her was Taylor Tolefree with seven.  Kara Wehrs led the Jayhawks in assists with a game high 28, whereas Brianne Riley finished with a team high 11 digs.

NCCU Drops First Match Of Annual Tournament

DURHAM, N.C.- In its first match as a full Division I volleyball program, North Carolina Central could not find its offensive and defensive flow during the fifth annual Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament falling to Campbell in three straight sets (17-25, 14-25, 20-25).

NCCU senior Shantel Moore returned to the court with dominance, recording 13 kills and three block assists.  Moore led the offense during set one and two, turning nine attempts into five kills with one error in set one and converting nine attempts into five kills over three errors in set two.  Moore's blocking  show began during set three, with three consecutive block assists, taking the Eagles to a three-point lead.

Maroon and gray sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao took on the setter's role.  In her second year as the offensive leader, Kalao distributed 24 assists, while circulating a total 71 sets.

Making her college debut was freshman Dayanna Arrufat.  The Trujilo Alto, Puerto Rico native, led the team in digs with seven.  Senior Emmanuelle Santos also contributed to the defense with five digs on the night.

Campbell's Annie Kobeski was an all-around threat to the Eagles with seven kills, four service aces and five block assists.  Jessica Groen and Kelsey Marek supported the offensive campaign with seven kills and six kills, respectively.

Heather Wilson commanded the Camels' setting game with a .440 setting percentage by distributing 22 assists on 50 total sets.  Wilson contributed to the offense hitting .400 percent with kills and five attempts.

Eagles Drop Season Opener to Miami (Ohio)

Miami (Ohio) 3, Coppin State 0

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Ariel Richard had eight kills and Janka Schmitt added six kills, but Coppin State lost to Miami (Ohio) 25-19, 25-10, 25-19 in the Eagles season opener on Friday at the Quality Inn/ASICS Classic at Indiana State.

The loss spoiled the debut of first-year head coach Millicent Sylvan-Van Norden as the Red Hawks posted a team hitting percentage of .446 in winning their season opener.

The Eagles hit .421 in the opening set, but were limited to .000 in the second set and .074 in the third set.

Richard posted a .278 hitting percentage and also added two digs, while Schmitt hit .455 for the match and added two digs.

Vanity Massey, Tyler Phillips and Gabrielle Otero each had three digs to pace Coppin State, while Kristine Bindule and Torie Livingston each had nine assists.

Coppin State Volleyball Tops Chicago State in Five Set Thriller

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Janka Schmitt had 14 kills, Ariel Richard had 13 kills and 13 digs and Salena Weekly added 11 kills and three blocks and Coppin State posted its first victory of the season with a thrilling 25-22, 21-25, 28-26, 19-25, 17-15 victory over Chicago State on Friday at the Quality Inn/ASICS Classic at Indiana State.

It marked the Eagles first victory of the season and also the first Coppin State victory for first-year head coach Millicent Sylvan-Van Norden.

Coppin State (1-1) used a balanced attack and a solid defensive effort to hold off the Cougars.

In addition to the three players in double figures in kills, senior Vanity Massey added nine kills. Kristine Bindule paced the CSU offense with 42 assists.

Freshman Gabrielle Otero led the Coppin State defensive effort as she finished with 26 digs, which ranks second all-time in Eagle history. Danyel Davis and Sepiuta Tonga each share the school record with 27 digs.

Chicago State forced a fifth, and deciding, set by notching a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.

The Eagles once again had to rally in the fifth set after falling behind 6-1 to begin the set.

Two kills by Weekly and akill by Schmitt helped bring the Eagles to within 8-6 midway through the deciding set.

A pair of setting errors by the Cougars tied the match at 11-11, but a Coppin State attack error and a ball handling error gave Chicago State a 13-11 lead.

A Coppin State service error gave the Cougars a 14-12 lead and pushed the Eagles to the brink of defeat.

A Chicago State service error and a service ace by Otero tied the match at 14-14.

The Eagles faced another match point after a CSU hitting error, but Schmitt notched a kill to tie the set at 15-15.

Coppin State took its first lead of the set on a Chicago State attack error and Schmitt then recorded a kill giving the Eagles the set, and the match.

SC State Women's Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Tennessee State

Tennessee State 3, South Carolina State 0

Clemson, S.C.-SC State fell to Tennessee State, 3-0, (17-25, 16-25, 19-25) in its 2011 season-opener. The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tigers met in the opening game of the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson University. The tournament, which concludes tomorrow, is being contested at Jervey Gymnasium on the campus of Clemson University.

Shabree Roberson led SC State (0-1) offensively with seven kills. Desire Waller contributed five kills and seven digs while Bria Brimmer put up 18 set assists in the match. Defensively Roberson had four total blocks (1 block solo-3 block assists) and Melissa Robinson picked up eight digs in the loss.

Tennessee State was led by Shaquita Williams and Terakka Walker with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Erika Moss put up 33 set assists and Britani Hathorn had 21 digs in as the Lady Tigers improved to 1-0 on the season.
