UMES? Frahm Named Academic All-American

The academic honors keep rolling in for four-time All-American Kristina Frahm The latest, released today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), is a nod as a First-Team selection for the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Team.

The Women's At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

Frahm is the first athlete from Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to ever earn the honor.  Of the 45 University Division (DI) and 45 College Division (DII & DIII) athletes named to first, second or third teams, Frahm is the only bowler on the list.  In fact, she is the only bowler to ever make a first or second team.  Lisa Friscioni of Faireligh Dickinson was a third-team nod in 2006.

An Accounting major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Frahm led UMES to the 2008 and 2011 NCAA Division I women's bowling championship. A first team All-American selection in those years and a four-time selection overall, she had a 208.67 average and was named as the Most Valuable Performer at the national championship tournament. Named as a All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection three times, she was also the winner of the NCAA Elite 88 Award. Frahm was awarded the Richard A. Bernstein Award, the highest academic honor given by the University.

Frahm and teammate Martha Perez (Bogota, Colombia) were both First-Team All District selections earlier this year, putting them in contention for All-American honors.

She is joined on the first-team by 14 other athletes that include: Vicki Bendus, who plays ice hockey for Mercyhurst, Alyssa DeLorenz who plays lacrosse for Bucknell, Eva Huckova and Amy Glen, who both ski for Utah and Vermont respectively and Kayla Hoffman and Maddie Pearsall who are gymnasts for Alabama and Cornell respectively.  Also on the team are tennis standouts Christine Chiricosta and Claire Clark from Bowling Green and Louisiana Monroe, golfers Katie Detlefsen from Central Florida, Therese Koelbael from UNLV and Brooke Pancake from Alabama as well as swimmers Elina Eggers, Kaylee Jamison and Wendy Trott from Arizona State, Minnesota and Georgia respectively.

Hoffman was named the winner of the Academic All-America® of the Year award in the University Division.

Of the 15 Scholar-Athletes on the Capital One Academic All-America® University Division Women's At-Large first team, six of them have perfect 4.0 G.P.A.'s. Their average G.P.A. is an incredible 3.98.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
