UMES' Frahm And Perez Earn NTCA All-Academic Nods

The 2011 University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dual national champion women's bowling team picked up some more honors recently, being recognized by the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) for their academics.  Five Lady Hawks were honored for having a GPA of 3.40 or better with standout Kristina Frahm earning First-Team honors.

Frahm, was one of five bowlers nationally selected for the first team.  An Accounting major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Frahm led UMES to the 2008 and 2011 NCAA Division I women's bowling championship. A first team All-American selection in those years and a four-time selection overall, she had a 208.67 average and was named as the Most Valuable Performer at the national championship tournament. Named as All-MEAC first-team selection three times, she was also the winner of the NCAA Elite 88 Award. Frahm was awarded the Richard A. Bernstein Award, the highest academic honor given by the University.

Most recently she was named a Capital One CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) First-team Academic All-American, the first ever from UMES.

Receiving second team honors was Martha Perez.  Perez is also highly decorated, being recently named an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar and was the UMES Department of Social Science's Most Outstanding Student at an honors convocation earlier this season. Perez is a two-time All-American and a former MEAC  Outstanding Performer.  Along with Frahm, Perez was a CoSIDA Capital One First-Team Academic All-District II Team selection.

Teammates Megan Buja, T'nia Falbo and Anggie Ramirez were also named to the list as bowlers meeting their NTCA's academic standards.  All three return to UMES to help defend their national titles.  Frahm and Perez both graduated in May.

The Lady Hawks have exceled in the classroom.  With a combined team GPA over 3.5 the team hoisted the Women's Team of Scholars Award at the year-end athletic banquet this past May.  They have won that award for the past five seasons.

All NCAA bowlers that compile a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40 during 2010-11 are eligible to be named NTCA All-Academic, with the first, second and third team designations allotted to those student-athletes who also drew the most voting support for the NTCA's All-America teams. A total of 123 players from 29 institutions received the All-Academic honor in 2010-11.
