NCCU Men's Tennis Junior Espitia Earns Academic All-District Honors

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University junior men's tennis student-athlete Alejandro Espitia has been voted to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All‐District Men's At‐Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, (CoSIDA) in recognition of the nation's top student‐athletes for their combined performance on the field of play and in the classroom.

A native of Bogota, Colombia, Espitia was honored on the First Team of the University Division (Division I programs) in District 3 (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia), and will now be placed on the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America® Team consideration. 

Espitia has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average in all six semesters at NCCU as a political science major. He received the 2011 Outstanding International Affairs Student Award from the NCCU Department of Political Science and is a two-time recipient of the Chancellor's Award as the NCCU student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average.

On the court, Espitia posted a 7-10 record at Nos. 2 and 3 singles positions and a 9-6 mark at No. 2 doubles.

Fellow 2010-11 Capital One Academic All‐District Men's At‐Large First Team honorees include Christian Blocker of Miami, Seth Broster of Clemson, Dorian Cohen of Duke, Bill Cregar of Georgia, Mark Dylla of Georgia, Brett Fraser of Florida, Pedro Graber of Virginia Tech, Kinshuk Sharma of UNC-Wilmington, and Andrew Stoker of East Carolina.

Men's at-large sports considered for recognition include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
