Three Hawks Finish Qualifying At Singles Championship

In the last event that two Lady Hawks will bowl under the maroon and gray of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Maria Rodriguez and Kristina Frahm qualified 10th and 11th respectively at the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC).  Freshman teammate Megan Buja qualified 14th in the field of 16 bowlers.

While none of the three earned a top four seed, which have a bye through the first two rounds, all are in elite company.  The women's field contains just 16 women, the top four qualifiers at each singles qualifier, held earlier this season before the team qualifiers.  Frahm, Rodriguez and Buja were the top three qualifiers in their sectional while Frahm and Rodriguez had the top two highest qualifying scores of any women bowler at any sectional.

All players advanced to Tuesday's match-play bracket, which will be broadcast live on BOWL.com.  Competition resumes at 7:40 a.m. central, with the opening round of match play.  The top four women's qualifiers earned byes into Round 3 of match play, while the sixth through eighth qualifiers earned first-round byes.

Rodriguez, the 10th seed will bowl against the 15th seed, Kandis Garland from Northwestern Ohio.  If Rodriguez wins, she will advance to round two at 9:15 a.m. and face Kristen Ruzicka from Midland.  Ironically, Frahm, the 11th seed will face off with teammate Buja, the 14th seed.  The winner of that match will face Kim Yioulos from Pikeville.  All matches in the event will be best-of-five games.

In the women's division, Vanderbilt's Brittni Hamilton, a Team USA and Junior Team USA member, led the field by nearly 300 pins. Kara Bunting of Central Florida was the closest to Hamilton, settling for second place with 2,356. Calumet College's Alice Veenstra was third with 2,351.  Jenny Petzoldt of Lindenwood earned the final bye in fourth place with a pin fall of 2,348.

Rodriguez tallied 2,274 pins, just 10 pins out of ninth and 82 pins from 2nd place.  Frahm tallied 2,227, 47 pins behind Rodriguez.  Buja posted a 2,197, 11 pins out of 13th.  Rodriguez posted the highest game of the three with a 243 in game 12 while Frahm tallied a 216 in game one.  Buja rolled a 214 in her 10th game.
