MEAC Announces Softball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., May 2, 2011- Norfolk State centerfielder Danielle Wright earned MEAC Player of the Week honors in softball, the conference announced on Monday.  Coppin State's Paige Arnold was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Norfolk State's Jamie Schulle earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Wright (CF, 5-3, Jr., Safety Harbor, Fla.)  hit .500 (12-of-24) with eight RBI, two home runs and one double  to guide the Spartans to seven victories last week.  Wright tallied 12 runs and stole seven bases during the series. Defensively, she added 10 putouts.

Arnold (P, 5-7, Jr., Detroit, Mich.) had a 0.88 ERA and finished 3-0 against Maryland Eastern Shore last week.  The junior pitched back-to-back shutouts against the Lady Hawks and struck out 21 batters in 16 innings.

Schulle (P, 5-7, Fr., Maxwell, Texas) pitched 18 innings to earn a 1.94 ERA in two victories last week.  The rookie struck out 18 and walked four batters.

Other Top Performers:

Casey Beighley (DSU) had a 1.75 ERA and was 1-1 last week against Maryland and Hampton. 

Stacey Burgos (CSU) was 6-of-10 (.600) for the week with five RBI, one home run and four doubles against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Charlise Castro (UMES) batted .667 with one RBI, one home run and one double in a loss to Coppin State.

Simone Ceasar (B-CU) was 5-of-11 (.454) to aid the Lady Wildcats to a 3-1 mark last week.

Jordan Eades (MSU) struck out three and finished with a 0.00 ERA against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Allison Garcia (B-CU) went 3-1 in four games last week with 11 strikeouts in 24 innings.

Tonya Giles (SCSU) hit .666 (2-of-3) with one RBI and one homer in a non-conference win against North Carolina Central.

Vianney Gomez (SCSU) recorded a save with nine strikeouts in 20.3 innings and finished 1-1 last week.

Emily Johnson (How) posted three RBI and two home runs in four games for the Lady Bison. 

Carly Martin (How) struck out four and walked one in six innings against Morgan State.

Casey Pomeroy (NSU) was 4-0 last week with a 1.12 ERA, including 16 strikeouts, in 25.0 innings for the Spartans.

Jordan Reid (DSU) hit .625 with two RBI and two doubles in five games for the Lady Hornets.

Kelsey Rodney (B-CU) recorded three RBI and two doubles in four Lady Wildcat games.

Stephanie Sarris (DSU) was 1-0 last week with a 0.84 ERA against the Hampton Lady Pirates.

Lydia Walther-Rodriguez (MSU) batted .530 last week with seven RBI, one home run and one double for the Lady Bears.
