DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Landon Clement of the North Carolina Central was named to the first team of the 2011 University Division All-State Men's Basketball team as selected by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA).
Clement, alongside Omar Carter from Appalachian State were the only juniors selected to the first team. Center Thomas Coleman of North Carolina A&T State, along with Elon University's Chris Long and UNC Wilmington's Chad Tomko all made the first team as well.
This is the second honor that Clement has garnered after his record breaking season, where he destroyed NCCU's mark of three-pointers in a year with 109 surpassing his coach, LeVelle Moton who hit 87 in the 1994-95 campaign. The 2011 NCAA Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year became the first Eagle in school history to record 100 or more 3-pointers in a season. He scored 20-plus points on 11 different occasions and scored in double figures in all 30 games, including a career-high 33 points on Senior Night against South Carolina State where he was 8-for-16 (50%) from the field and a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line in the Eagles 78-62 win.
To round out the rest of the first team, Carter, a junior guard at Appalachian State, averaged 16.3 points and 5.8 rebounds in earning All-Southern Conference honors. He was named to the NABC all-District second team. The high-scoring native of Charlotte, N.C., scored 10 or more points in 10 games. He finished the season ranked fifth in the Southern Conference in scoring.
Coleman, a senior center at North Carolina A&T, averaged 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting .619 from the field. He ranked fourth in the nation in field goal pct. and seventh in the nation with 19 double-doubles. He scored 20 or more points 12 times and was an All-MEAC First Team performer as well as NABC All-District selection.
Tomko, a senior guard at UNC Wilmington, averaged 17.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists. A second team all-CAA performer, Tomko ranked tied for second in the league in scoring and tied for third in assists. He completed his career as UNC Wilmington's third all-time leading scorer with 1,702 career points.
Long, a senior guard at Elon, averaged 14.7 points and led the Southern Conference with 6.0 assists per game. He completed his career with 528 assists, second-most in school history. His 188 assists this season rank second on Elon's single-season charts. Elon's leading scorer, Long also surpassed 1,000 career points.
