Pellum Named VaSID All-State Second Team

FARMVILLE, Va. - Hampton junior guard Darrion Pellum was named All-State second team in the University Division by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) on Tuesday.

Pellum led the Pirates and was second in the MEAC in scoring this season, averaging 17.5 points per game to lead the Pirates (24-9, 11-5 MEAC) to the MEAC Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time since 2006.

Pellum scored in double figures in 29 of the 32 games in which he played this season, including a career-high 34 against Dominican (Calif.) on Dec. 29 and 33 at High Point on Nov. 28. He also pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds against Delaware State on Jan. 29 to go along with 28 points for his first career double-double.

For the MEAC Tournament, Pellum averaged 17.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and earned the tournament Most Outstanding Player honor.

Pellum was also second in the MEAC in steals, averaging 1.7 per contest. He was one of only two MEAC players to make the All-State Teams. 
 
Justin Harper from Richmond was named VaSID Player of the Year, while D.J. Covington of VMI earned Rookie of the Year honors. Virginia Commonwealth's Shaka Smart was named VaSID Coach of the Year.

O'Quinn Named to VaSID All-State  Second Team

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State junior center Kyle O'Quinn was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State second team, the organization announced on Tuesday.

O'Quinn had a breakout year in 2010-11. The 6-10 post player ended the season ranked fourth in the nation in blocked shots (3.4), fifth in rebounding (11.1) and eight in double-doubles (19). He also led the Spartans and ranked fifth in the conference in scoring, at 16.4 points per game, and was second in the MEAC with a 55.6 field goal percentage.

The all-state award caps off a season in which O'Quinn was also a first-team All-MEAC and NABC All-District 15 selection and was voted MEAC Defensive Player of the Year.
