B-CU Completes Weekend Sweep with 11-5 Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A pair of big innings propelled Bethune-Cookman to an 11-5 win over Norfolk State Sunday afternoon at Sunnyland Park.

After NSU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third, the Wildcats scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning and tallied five more in the fifth to sweep the conference-opening series. Bethune-Cookman improved to 15-20 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. NSU dropped to 7-16, 0-3.

Allison Garcia (10-7) got the start for the Wildcats for the third time on the weekend and earned the win, giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in all seven innings. Freshman Jamie Schulle (1-7) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.

Freshman Morgan Boyd had three hits for the Spartans, while freshman Kathy Cortez and senior Jeanette Sauceda each went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Leadoff hitter Ashton Hinds led the Wildcats with a 3-for-5 day with two runs and two RBI. Kelsey Rodney added two hits and three RBI, while Garcia and Cesley Tafoya each added two RBI.

Clement's Walk-Off Single Leads Aggies To Victory

GREENSBORO -
Freshman Lauren Clement helped the Aggies avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of S.C. State by hitting a walk-off single to lead N.C. A&T to a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

The Aggies trailed 5-3 going into the home half of the seventh. Juanita Jernigan opened the inning with a double to right center field. Sophomore Hope Fletcher followed with another double to score pinch runner Niasia Calhoun. With no one out, freshman Tiffany Macklin put runners on first and third with an infield single.

Senior Ryanne Hill hit an RBI single to right field that tied the game at 5. Dominique Gillard moved Macklin and Hill into scoring position by grounding out to the right side of the diamond. But after a long battle with S.C. State starter Vianney Gomez, Sabrina Edmonds struck out on a 3-2 pitch, leaving Clement as the Aggies' last chance to win in regulation.

The Bulldogs would add another run before Clement's heroics. Fletcher picked up the win on the mound as she improved to 5-10. She also had an excellent day at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Lady Rattlers Bomb Lady Eagles to Win 10-1

CARY, NC (Apr. 3) - The FAMU Lady Rattlers (17-18) used 17 hits to complete the third game sweep of the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles (4-24) today at Thomas Brooks Park. 

Three Lady Rattlers had three hits each to pace the team.  Jasmin Donaldson, went three-for-three and scored two runs for the Lady Rattlers.  She also had one RBI and two put outs.  Erika Garcia, also went three-for-three, scoring once and two RBIs.  Francesca Singletary, rounded out the trio of three-hit Lady Rattlers as she scored one run.

Ashleigh Minter (1-0) got the win for the Lady Rattlers. She pitched five innings, allowed only three runs and struck out four.  She only allowed two walks and allowed no earned runs.

The Lady Eagles could only muster one run.  Cember Carmichael, the designated hitter/left fielder, was the only Eagle to cross the plate.  Nadia Jeffries, Amanda Bullock and Nadia McPeek would be the only Lady Eagles to get hits, with one a piece.

Softball Takes Two Of Three From UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -Hampton won two of three games against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday at Lady Hawks Field.

The Lady Pirates (10-20, 2-1 MEAC) opened the day by finishing Saturday's postponed contest and taking a 14-9 win, before winning what was originally supposed to be Saturday's second game 3-2.

UMES took the third game 12-4 in five innings.

The Lady Hawks struck first on Saturday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning before Hampton answered with a run in the second on an RBI single from junior Travonna Byrd.

The Lady Pirates then pushed across six runs in the third to take a 7-2 lead. Junior Sharde Estep reached on an error to bring in the first two runs, before junior Rebecca Magett singled home another run.

UMES scored four runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 7-6, but the Lady Pirates added two runs in the fourth on a two-run single from sophomore Nina Ferguson.

Hampton added two more runs in the fifth -highlighted by a triple from sophomore Tamara Vickers- and three runs in the top of the sixth; Magett doubled home a run, while Ferguson brought in another with a triple.

UMES went down in order in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday.

Magett went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in two runs. Ferguson drove in a team-high three runs. Brents threw 3.2 innings in relief to pick up her third win of the season, striking out one.

The Lady Pirates struck first in the first inning of the second game, when Estep singled home a run, before taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning on an Estep sacrifice fly. Magett doubled and scored on an error in the fifth to put Hampton up 3-0.

UMES scored a run in the fifth and another in the seventh.

Byrd singled home a run in the third to tie the game at 3-3, but the Lady Hawks scored four runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Coppin State Tops Morgan State 4-3

BALTIMORE
-- Freshman Heather Josker had a two-out, game-winning single in the top of the seventh inning lifting Coppin State to a 4-3 MEAC victory over Morgan State on Sunday at Lois T. Murray Field.

Josker singled to left to drive in Erica Washington snapping a 3-3 tie and sending the Eagles to their first conference victory of the season.

With one out, Washington drew a walk to begin the rally. Patrice Williams sacrificed Washington to second with a bunt and Josker followed with her game-winning hit.

Paige Arnold then worked out of a jam to secure the victory. After giving up a single to lead off the inning, Arnold induced a pop up and two straight ground balls giving Coppin State its first victory over Morgan State in four tries this season.

Coppin State (7-9, 1-2 MEAC) also got two hits, including a home run, from Jade Dudley.

Morgan State's (9-20, 2-1 MEAC) Boshia Richardson recorded her second home run of the season, while finishing the day going 3-for-3 with a run scored and drove in all three of the Lady Bears' runs.
