Delaware State Edges Coppin State 1-0

Pinch-hitter Rachel Carroll singled in Kelsey Lewis with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning leading Delaware State to a 1-0 victory over Coppin State on Tuesday at the Hornets Nest.

With one out in the seventh inning, Leslie Pleasanton reached on an infield single to shortstop to begin the rally. Lewis pinch ran for Pleasanton and advanced to second when Tawny Reeger reached on an error by Amber Miller.

Carroll then followed with a single up the middle giving the Hornets the 1-0 victory and their 27th-straight victory over Coppin State. The Eagles last win in the series came in 2004.

The rally by Delaware State (24-11, 6-1 MEAC) spoiled another solid pitching performance from Coppin State junior Paige Arnold. She allowed five hits, no earned runs and struck out nine batters.

Stephanie Sarris went 6.2 innings and allowed only five hits and struck out three to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The Eagles (9-13, 2-5 MEAC), who had six hits, had several opportunities to score but could not push across a run.

In the first inning Heather Josker led off the game with a single. With one out, she advanced to second when Stacey Burgos drew a walk.

Arnold also walked which loaded the bases with one out, but Sarris came in to relieve starter Amber Coburn and retired the next two Coppin State batters.

In the Coppin State fifth, Miller singled with two outs and advanced to third on a double by Burgos. After the Hornets intentionally walked Arnold, Jade Dudley flew out to left to end the threat.
