Raleigh, N.C. - April 15, 2011 - The first round of the 2011 MEAC Women's Tennis Championship is complete. Howard, Delaware State, Florida A&M and South Carolina State all advanced to the semi-final round. The women's semi-final round will begin at 3 p.m.
In match one, Howard's Brooke Hawthorne clinched the victory for the Lady Bison winning at the number four singles position against Norfolk State's Rebecca Graff 6-0, 6-2. Howard will meet Florida A&M in the semi-final round.
Match two placed Delaware State against Bethune Cookman. DSU's Cristina Andrade secured the win for the Lady Hornets in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Bethune-Cookman's Andrea Paez. The Lady Hornets would go on to win the match 4-1. Delaware State will face South Carolina State in semi-final action.
The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs would win match number three with a 4-0 victory over Morgan State. SCSU's Sabrina Mendez cliched the victory sweeping Morgan State's Delissa Carline 6-0, 6-0. Next up for the Lady Bulldogs will be the Lady Hornets of Delaware State.
Florida A&M and Hampton closed out the women's opening round. Florida A&M would finish victoriously winning the match 4-0. FAMU's Alexis Brown obtained to win for the Lady Rattlers topping Hampton's Calisa Reid in two sets 6-1, 6-3.
Update: The Men's Tennis Championship quarterfinals are underway... #1 South Carolina State won the doubles point over #4 Maryland Eastern Shore. #4 Norfolk State upset #1 Howard to go up 1-0. #2 Morgan State took the doubles point over #3 Bethune-Cookman and #2 Florida A&M is up 1-0 over #3 Hampton heading into singles play.
