TOWSON, Md. -- Paige Arnold pitched a six-hit shutout and delivered the game-winning double lifting Coppin State to a split of its doubleheader and the school's first-ever victory against Towson on Thursday at Towson Center Field.
After dropping the first game 8-0, the Eagles rode the pitching and hitting of Arnold to a 2-0 victory in the second game. The victory marked Coppin State's first win against the Tigers in 16 tries.
Arnold was locked in a pitching duel with Dominique Ortega before the Eagles finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning.
Heather Josker started the rally with a one-out single to right and Amber Miller followed with a single to left.
After Stacey Burgos bounced into a fielder's choice, Arnold ripped a double to right center that scored Miller and Burgos for the first two runs of the game. Jade Dudley followed with a line single to right, but Arnold was tagged out at third to end the inning.
It was more than enough offense for Arnold who limited the Tigers to six hits and struck out 11 batters.
Towson threatened in the bottom the sixth inning when Andrea Stevenson tripled to lead off the inning. But Arnold retired Lindsey Kent on a groundout and struck out Jillian Donnelly and Mickelle Oslin to end the inning.
The Tigers won the opener 8-0 as Katie Lingmai pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 13 batters.
Freshman Carmen Frazier had the Eagles only hit in the first game with a clean single in the third inning.
