UMES Drops Opening Game To Central Missouri By 44 Pins
TAYLOR, Mich.-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) opened the seeding day on Thursday with a loss to No. 3 Central Missouri State University. The two teams slugged it out with the lead exchanging hands numerous times. The Lady Hawks took a lead of almost 30 pins into the 10th frame but a clutch spare on a split gave the win to the Jennies.
The Hawks can attribute the loss to seven open frames they left along the way, two coming from an unlikely source, National Player of the Year Maria Rodriguez. Anggie Ramirez and Martha Perez also left a pair. While they hurt the total pinfall, UMES was able to recover to win three of the five positions.
Paula Vilas, bowling lead-off left an open in the second but recovered throwing five more strikes along the way to post a 204 and top her lead-off counterpart by 10 pins (194). Perez in the second spot also rolled a 200 game but gave up 35 pins to her counterpart. It was in that spot that CMSU picked up a nasty split in the tenth to distance herself from Perez, ultimately by 35 pins (235).
The Hawks were hurt in the third position. Ramirez started with an open frame and them rolled one again in the sixth. What ultimately hurt her was her inability to throw strikes as she threw just four. She tallied a 184 but her opponent posted an impressive 244 to top Ramirez by 60 pins. Kristina Frahm was on fire for the Hawks, opening with five straight strikes before throwing a spare in the sixth. She would recover to roll two more before again sparing in the ninth and tenth frames. She finished with a 246, a game high for anyone in the two teams. Her opponent posted a 214, 32 pins behind Frahm.
Rodriguez, who also started with an open in the first frame and had one in the fifth, tallied eight strikes, including three in the tenth to salvage a 205 and top her opponent by nine pins (196).
Despite winning three of those four positions and having four of the five games over 200, UMES was topped by 44 pins, 1083-1039 and drops to 0-1 in the seeding round and is 98-31 on the season. They take on Sam Houston State next who topped Vanderbilt in the opening frame, 958-946.
Hawks Rebound To Dominate Sam Houston State By 336 Pins
TAYLOR, Mich.-For just the third time in school history UMES shot a 1200 team game. This one however was a little more special as they set a school-record with a 1240 game in a 336 pin win over Sam Houston State in round two of the seeding day of the NCAA Championships. The Bearkats posted a respectable 904 in the contest.
All five UMES bowlers posted 200 games with Kristina Frahm again dominating, The First- Team All-American missed one ball in the ninth frame which turned out to be a nine. That was the difference in a perfect game as she closed with three strikes to post a 279. Player of the Year Maria Rodriguez also rebounded to tally a 267, throwing a 9-spare in the sixth and on the last two balls of the tenth.
Martha Perez also put together a nice game with a 254, sparing just two frames. Paula Vilas rolled the lead-off, posting a 224 and T'nia Falbo came off the bench to roll for Anggie Ramirez and threw a solid 216, normally an impressive game, but lucky for the Hawks, was their fifth best.
Each bowler won their position with Frahm dominating by 75 pins while Perez was up 73 pins and Vilas 72 pins. Rodriguez won by 62 pins and Falbo by 54.
In contrast to game one UMES left just three opens and one was on the third ball in the tenth by Rodriguez. The Bearkats left numerous opens and only mustered two games over 200, a 204 and 205 in their fourth and fifth spots respectively.
The Hawks even their seeding round record to 1-1 and now take on Fairleigh Dickinson, the only 2-0 team in the event. There is a six way tie for second place with Kutztown in eighth as the only 0-2 team.
Hawks Stay Hot, Hand No. 1 Fdu Its First Loss
TAYLOR, Mich.-Despite six open frames the Lady Hawks pushed through and overcame the breaking down oil to shoot a 995, topping the nation's No.1 team, Fairleigh Dickinson by 50 pins as the Knights shot a 945. Martha Perez shot a clean game, marking in every frame to pace the Hawk attack with a 233.
While the oil pattern is starting to break down, UMES seemed to have a better hand on the adjustments, beating FDU in three of the five positions to secure the win. Perez through five straight strikes in the fifth through ninth frame and topped her pairing by 57 pins. Kristina Frahm was still great, rolling a 204 but leaving her first open of the tournament with a seven split in the second frame. She would post a 23 pin advantage.
Paula Vilas was just shy of a 200 game with a 193, topping her lead-off counterpart by 24 pins. She tallied four strikes but left an open on a split seven in the sixth. T'nia Falbo rolled a 186 with just one open and four strikes while Maria Rodriguez posted just a 179, 34 pins down at the anchor position.
FDU left three opens in the eighth frame to secure the victory for UMES.
Regardless, the Hawks overcame the Knights to move into a tie for first place. With the win over FDU they will have a tiebreaker over them for tomorrow's seeding.
The Hawks take on Nebraska in the final match of the morning and then break for lunch before playing the final three afternoon matches.
Hawks Bowl Well, Nebraska Bowls Better, Top UMES 1159-1044
Frahm and Rodriguez rolls in the 220s, not enough to top the hot Huskers.
TAYLOR, Mich.-With the oil breaking down even more, Nebraska made the right adjustments and posted huge numbers to top the Hawks 1159-1104 despite a 229 and 225 performance from senior All-Americans Maria Rodriguez and Kristina Frahm respectively.
While the senior pair bested their Husker counterparts by 27 combined pins, Nebraska made adjustments that led to big pinfall numbers in the first through three slots, getting 240, 235 and 257 respectively.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) wasn't bad themselves, getting a 204 from Paula Vilas in the lead-off spot and a 200 from T'nia Falbo bowling in the third slot. The only off game came from the combination of Martha Perez and Anggie Ramirez in the two hole; as they were trying different combinations to put up pins. They combined for a 186. Those first three slots bested UMES by 142 pins, with the third position accounting for 57 of those.
"I don't think anyone else would have beaten us that game," said Assistant Coach Doug Dukes. "Nebraska bowled really well and sometimes all you can do is appreciate how well they bowled."
UMES falls to 2-2 in the standings, in a four-way tie for third place as Nebraska and Fairleigh Dickinson are both 3-1. Kutztown got in the win column with a victory over Central Missouri, putting them at 1-3 and in a tie for seventh with Vanderbilt.
Ironically the Hawks have recorded the highest pinfall to date with a 4,318, 110 better than first place Nebraska. The NCAA used to seed based on pinfall from 2004-2009 but started basing it on win/loss record in 2010.
UMES Topples Vanderbilt 1029-1000 To Open Second Set
TAYLOR, Mich.- After a short break for lunch the Hawks started their afternoon session with a match-up against fifth-ranked Vanderbilt. The two rivals played a close match but the Hawks won big in the second position as Martha Perez put on a dominating performance, topping her counterpart by 58 pins, 243-185. That helped UMES to a 1029-1000 win.
Perez threw eight strikes over the last nine frames. The only glitch was the sixth where she started off with a five but kicked up some pins to clean the frame, her only open would be the first where she left one pin after a split seven.
It was back and forth for most of the match but the Commodores rolled back-to-back-t- back splits in the third through fifth positions of game four and the Hawks took advantage to take a lead.
Kristina Frahm was solid with a 211, adding to her field leading pin fall. In the fourth position she would garner a 19 pin edge while T'nia Falbo stayed strong winning her spot by 16 pins. Falbo left two opens in the first five frames but recovered to roll five strikes over the rest of the game.
The Hawks left eight open frames in the match, three by Rodriguez who struggled on the fresh oil laid down between sessions. She would throw splits in the ninth and tenth frames to tally a 163. Vandy's anchor posted a 200 to have the 37 pin advantage.
Next UMES takes on Kutztown who is tied for seventh with Vanderbilt at 1-4. That match will start at 4:40 p.m.
Hawks Falter, Roll Lowest Game Of The Day In Loss To Kutztown 990-941
TAYLOR, Mich.- Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) couldn't get it going at all in the sixth match of the day as they lost to Kutztown 990-941, leaving nine open frames and falling in the first four spots. Maria Rodriguez was the bright spot in the match, king like the National Player of the Year she is, posting a 224 and outdueling KU anchor Samantha Santoro by 50 pins.
Rodriguez looked great opening with a pair of spares but then five straight strikes, sparing and striking. She caught the open bug in the tenth however rolling a seven and one, once the match was no longer in contention.
Paula Vilas was also solid at the lead-off spot posting a 209, 11 pins off her counterpart. She threw six strikes along the way.
The problem for UMES was the middle where the Hawks couldn't get it going. Martha
Perez and T'nia Falbo were both pulled and Megan Buja and Anggie Ramirez finished their games respectively. Perez officially finished with a 154, Falbo with a 163 and Kristina
Frahm had a respectable 191. They gave up a whopping 88 pins at in those spots.
The loss drops UMES to 3-3 and from second place to third. Kutztown got their second win of the day to move to sixth place.
The Hawks have one match left, a date with Arkansas State at 5:40 p.m. Both teams are tied at 3-3 and the result could play greatly into the final standings.
UMES Rolls Past Arkansas State Earns Third Seed
Kristina Frahm leads the field in pinfall.
TAYLOR, Mich.- Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) were a little up and down in the win/loss column today but they ended on a high note, topping Arkansas State 1102-936 to earn a 4-3 record and the third seed in tomorrow's double-elimination bracket.
They will take on the same Red Wolves team, who earned the sixth seed overall, tomorrow beginning at 9:50 a.m.
After a startling upset loss to Kutztown, the Lady Hawks got it together, dominating the Red Wolves by 160 pins in the final match of the seeding round. National Player of the Year Maria Rodriguez led the charge throwing an impressive 266 made up of nine strikes and two spares. She topped the ASU anchor by 72 pins.
The Red Wolves never really got on track with no one rolling better than a 195, that coming in the fourth spot. That didn't matter however, as Kristina Frahm matched up against her and posted a solid 226, 31 pins better. Anggie Ramirez, inserted back into the lineup, posted a 236 in the third position, 56 pins better than the 180 ASU got there.
Frahm, who threw eight strikes in the game finished the day as the leader in total pinfall, posting an impressive 1582 for a 226 average. Frahm wasn't the only one throwing the ball well. Rodriguez finished third in the standings with a tally of 1533 pins and an average of 219.
"Those two did what our fourth and fifth bowlers are supposed to do," said head coach Sharon Brummell. "They were on their games and even when they struggled, they were still solid, they have done this for four years now, and it's why they are First-Team All- Americans."
The two helped UMES to the best total pin fall after day one, 7,390, 95 more pins than top- seeded FDU.
While the Hawks made lineup changes throughout the day, six UMES players were ranked in the top 18 in average in a field of 56 student-athletes who saw action as a starter today. Ramirez in just two games averaged a 210, while Perez and T'nia Falbo averaged a 207.6. Vilas averaged a 204.9.
Fairleigh Dickinson earned the top seed and will take on eighth seeded Kutztown tomorrow. FDU sported an impressive 6-1 mark but that blemish belonged to the Hawks when UMES topped the Knights in the morning session, 995-945. The two teams are ranked second and first respectively in the latest NTCA poll.
In other seedings, Nebraska earned the two spot and will take on seventh seeded Sam Houston State, Vanderbilt, who rebounded from a 1-4 start, will be the fourth seed and take on the fifth seeded Jennies of Central Missouri.
"I think we can be bowling on Saturday if we stay on track," said Brummell. "I am lookingforward to a good day. We know we can beat anybody here because we have. We can strike with the best of 'em and I feel confident heading into tomorrow."
