Howard Edges Coppin State in Extra Innings

Trina Kindred and Samantha Gatson drove in runs in the top of the eighth inning and Howard cut down the tying run at the plate to end the game as the Lady Bison defeated Coppin State 6-5 in eight innings on Monday at the Coppin State Field.

After Howard scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-4 lead the Lady Eagles fought back in the bottom of the inning.

Charma Robinson was placed on second base to start the inning using the international tie-breaker rules. She advanced to third on a groundout by Jade Dudley.

With two outs, Tiffani Whaley reached on an infield single to put runners on first and third. Melanie Buck then lofted a ball to shallow center that squirted out of the glove of a diving Lorae Robinson, which scored Robinson. Whaley attempted to score from first on the base hit, but was thrown out to end the game on the relay throw by Kindred.

With the victory, Howard won the series by winning two of the three games played. The Lady Bison improved to 12-21 overall and 3-3 in the MEAC.

Coppin State dropped to 8-11 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

After spotting the Lady Bison a run in the top of the first inning the Lady Eagles took the lead with a two-run second inning.

Dudley homered to left to tie the game at 1-1, and the Lady Eagles took the lead when Whaley singled in Paige Arnold who had doubled earlier.

Howard tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning and then scored two more times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Patrice Williams led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a sharp single to right. With two outs, Stacey Burgos blasted a game-tying home run to center that forced the game into extra innings.
