Norfolk State Avoids Sweep With Win Over Lady Rattlers
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 10)- Norfolk State avoided the three-game sweep as they defeated the Florida A&M University Softball team, 6-3 Sunday afternoon at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.
NSU (8-18, 1-5) finished with a game high nine hits, while FAMU (19-19, 2-1) tallied eight hits.
Tenisha Dixon and Tera Gainer both finished with two hits each to lead the Lady Rattlers, while Melina Valles finished with two hits for the Spartans.
Casey Pomeroy (4-5) received the win for NSU as she went the distance giving up eight hits, three earned runs and striking out four in seven innings.
Ashleigh Minter (1-1) received the loss for FAMU as he pitched one and two-third innings allowing six hits and five earned runs. Jennifer Lindsey also made an appearance on the mound for the Lady Rattler as she gave up three hits, one earned runs and striking out two in five and two-third innings of work.
The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead as Morgan Boyd scored on a Valles single to right field. Then Valles would score on a Candice Vasquez single through to the left side.
FAMU picked a run in the bottom of the first as Arianna Stewart scored on a bases loaded walk, cutting NSU's lead to 2-1.
NSU would score four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 6-1 as Danielle Wright singled scoring Boyd. Then Vallles would hit three-run double to right field scoring Wright, Boyd and Kathy Cortez.
The Rattlers would pick up two more runs as they scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on Dixon double scoring Courtney Harold, followed by a Whitney Robinson single scoring Tera Gainer in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 6-3 final.

Campbell And Lukens Lead DSU Shutout Over UMES
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -Janelle Lukens went 2-for-2 with a home run, double and two walks to lead the Delaware State to a 10-0 win over Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday afternoon at Lady Hawks Field.
Ashlyn Campbell picked up her eighth win of the season as she gave up just two hits, one walk and no runs with three strikeouts in four innings.
The Lady Hornets and Lady Hawks held each other scoreless through the first three innings before DSU cranked out four runs in the top of the fourth.
Lukens started the scoring as she reached with a one-out walk. Allison Ruben came in to pinch run for Lukens and immediately advanced to second on a passed ball from Carmen Gurrola.
Ashley Davis also reached on a walk and Leslie Pleasanton bunted to load the bases. Rubin scored on a sacrifice fly from Campbell before Chelsea Stern knocked a two RBI double to left center.
Jordan Reid, reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jasmine James that scored Stern to give the Lady Hornets a 4-0 advantage.
DSU capitalized on two UMES errors in the top of the sixth inning as the Lady Hornets scored three unearned runs on one hit to go up, 7-0.
Lukens, Davis and Pleasanton led off the seventh with a homer to right center, double to left center and single to left field, respectively. Reid continued the combat with a two-out double to center to score Pleasanton and take the 10-0 lead.
Stephanie Sarris pitched a perfect final two and one-thirds innings for DSU.
With the weekend sweep, the Lady Hornets improve to 22-10 on the season and 5-1 in the MEAC while the Lady Hawks fall to 6-28 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

Lady Wildcats Sweep SCSU Behind Gamch and Garcia
ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Allison Garcia threw a one-hit shutout and Aurelia Gamch drove in four runs as Bethune-Cookman (18-22 overall, 6-0 MEAC) run-ruled South Carolina State (6-33,2-4) 10-0 Sunday to conclude a three-game sweep.
Garcia walked none and struck out three to conclude a series where she gave up just one earned run in 15 innings on the mound and hit .700 (7-10) at the plate. Gamch blasted a three-homer in B-CU's five-run second inning that also saw Brianna Leverett post a two-run double.
Kelsey Rodney and Sabrina Ferguson each went 3-3 with a RBI. Rodney had a double and a triple.

Lady Bears Claim Series Following 8-0 Shutout Of Hampton On Sunday
HAMPTON, Va. (April 10, 2011)- Morgan State scoring a run in the third inning before erupting for six more in the fourth inning en route to an 8-0 MEAC victory over Hampton in five innings on Sunday afternoon at the HU Softball Complex.
Gabrielle Gomez led Morgan State (11-21, 4-2 MEAC) with a 3-for-3 performance, while Shareday Christina went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Devina Brown and Tamra Griffin each drove in two runs to lead the Lady Bears.
The Lady Bears scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Griffin reached on a fielder's choice RBI, which scored Amber Frame, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Morgan State managed to load the bases in the fourth inning and broke the game open with six runs. Frame drew a bases loaded walk to score Gomez and Brown hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Boshia Richardson for the second run of the inning. Frame and Sakina Smith both stole second and third base, respectively, and Tiffany Rubin followed with a walk to reload the bases. Griffin then drew another bases loaded walk to score Smith and increase the Morgan State lead to 4-0. Hampton made a pitching change with Travonna Byrd coming in the game to face Lydia Rodriguez with bases loaded and she walked Rodriguez for another run, as Frame scored. Gomez singled in Rodriguez with a bunt and Griffin scored on a passed ball to make it a 7-0 game.
Morgan State got another run in the top of the fifth when Brown reached on an error at second base, scoring Christina from second for what would prove to the eighth and final run of the game. Morgan State pitcher Jordan Eades retired the Lady Pirates in order for the 8-0 shortened victory in five innings.
Eades recorded the victory for the Lady Bears, surrendering three hits and struck out four batters for the complete game shutout victory.

Robinson Walk-Off Homer Leads Coppin State to Split
BALTIMORE -- Senior Charma Robinson hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning leading Coppin State to a 5-3 victory and a split of its MEACdoubleheader versus Howard on Sunday at the Coppin State Field.
Robinson hit a towering drove to centerfield with one out that scored Stacey Burgos giving the Eagles the victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Howard defeated the Eagles 3-1 in game two to earn the split.
The home run by Robinson capped a furious Coppin State comeback.
Coppin State (8-10, 2-3 MEAC) then rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Paige Arnold singled to left to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Erica Washington sacrificed and then reached on a Bison throwing error.
Tiffani Whaley drove in Arnold with the tying run when she hit a fielder's choice to shortstop.
Howard regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning using the international tie-breaker rule.
With two outs, Rebecca Kirshner lined a single to right that scored Marisa Coats with the go-ahead run.
Josker was placed on second to start the Eagle eighth inning. She advanced to third and then came in to score on a pair of illegal pitches from Howard relief pitcher Emily Johnson.
Burgos lined a single to left and Robinson followed with a home run to straight away to centerfield giving the Eagles the walk-off victory.
Carly Martin allowed seven hits and one run in seven innings to lead the Bison to the game two victory.
The Eagles lone run in game two came when Whaley singled in Arnold in the bottom of the seventh inning.
