SC State Falls To Bethune-Cookman in a Conference Doubleheader

Orangeburg, S.C.-South Carolina State could not find much offense as they dropped a conference doubleheader to the Bethune-Cookman, (10-1; 9-1). The teams will meet again tomorrow to close-out the three-game conference series with a single game beginning at 12 noon.  The conference match-up will be played at the Hillcrest Softball Field in Orangeburg.

Bethune-Cookman (17-20, 5-0 MEAC) put up runs in three-of-the-five innings played in Game One. The Lady Wildcats scored three runs in the first, five in the second, and two runs in the fourth inning en route to its 10-1 Game One victory. SC State (6-32) lone run was scored by senior Tonya Giles in the bottom first inning

Game Two began a little more competitive as the score was 2-1 in favor Bethune-Cookman heading into the top of the fourth inning.  The Lady Wildcats had a breakout fourth inning as they put five runs. SC State allowed two additional runs Lady Wildcats runs in the top of the fifth as they fell in Game Two, 9-1.  Giles once again was the only Lady Bulldog to touch home plate.

On the day Giles led SC State with two runs off one hit.  On the mound Vianney Gomez was the loser for the Lady Bulldogs in both games will Allison Garcia picked up the wins in both games for Bethune-Cookman.

Lady Rattlers Sweep Norfolk State In Doubleheader

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 9) - Florida A&M picked a pair of MEAC wins as they swept Norfolk State  in a doubleheader, winning game one 3-1 and  blanking the Spartans in game two, 8-0. 

In game one, FAMU (19-18, 2-0 MEAC) tallied six hits, while NSU (7-18, 0-5 MEAC) garnered three.

The Lady Rattlers were paced by Brittany Doty and Erika Garcia as they both collected two hits from the plate, while Danielle Wright, Melina Ramirez and Morgan Boyd all finished with one hit each for the Spartans.

Jennifer Lindsey (8-8) picked up the win for FAMU as she toed the mound, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out six in seven innings.

Casey Pomeroy (3-5) took the loss for NSU as she gave up six hits, two earned runs and striking out two in six innings.

In game two, the Lady Rattlers' bats belted out nine hits, while the Spartans punched out four.

Doty, Genesis Lopez and Garcia led FAMU from the plate as they finished with two hits each, while NSU had four Spartans to finish with one hit each.

Robinson (10-10) picked up the win for the Lady Rattlers as she pitched five scoreless inning, allowing four hits and striking out two.

Jamie Schulle (1-8) received the loss for the Spartans as she gave up seven hits, three earned runs and striking out two in three innings of work.

Morgan State Comes From Behind To Defeat Hampton In Eight innings, 7-4

HAMPTON, Va. (April 9, 2011)- The Morgan State Lady Bears overcame a 4-0 deficit, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning, before defeating the host Hampton Lady Pirates, 7-4 in eight innings in Game 1 of a MEAC contest on Saturday afternoon at the HU Softball Stadium.

Trailing 4-1, Morgan State's Boshia Richardson began the seventh with a double to right center and Shareday Christina then followed with a RBI single up the middle to score Richardson and make it a 4-2 game. Hannah Montgomery pinch hit for Sakina Smith and laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Christina. Amber Frame reached on a fielder's choice and Christina beat the tag at third. Frame then advanced to second on a fielding error at second and reached third on another fielding error this time by the third baseman, while Christina stole home to make it a one run game. Frame later evened the game up at 4 all when Devina Brown singled to shortstop.

Morgan State pitcher Jordan Eades, who relieved starter Megan Johnson in the third inning, retired the Lady Pirates in order in the bottom half of the seventh to send the game in extra innings.

Morgan State (10-20, 3-1 MEAC) took advantage of their opportunity as Richardson delivered a RBI single with two runners on base to score Griffin and give the Lady Bears a 5-4 lead, their first lead of the game. Morgan State then loaded the bases when Christina was hit by a pitch. Smith followed with a RBI walk, scoring Rodriguez and extending the Lady Bears lead to 6-4. Frame followed with a single which hit off the third base bag to score Richardson for Morgan State's third run of the inning for a 7-4 advantage.

The Lady Pirates busted the game open in the second inning scoring four runs. Nina Furguson doubled to right center to score Travonna Byrd for the first run. Bre'Anna Brown later singled up the middle to score two more runs and increase Hampton's lead to 3-0. Sharde' Estep recorded a RBI strikeout and Tamara Vickers stole home on the play, giving the hosts a 4-0 cushion.

Morgan State first got on the board in the sixth inning when Brown led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by the center fielder and scored on the play. Tiffany Rubin was then hit by a pitch and Tamra Griffin walked. But the Lady Bear's momentum would quickly come to an end when Lydia Rodriguez flied out to left center and Rubin, who was running to third on the play, was thrown out at second for the double play. Gomez then grounded out to first to end the inning.

Richardson finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Brown also tallied two hits in five at bats to lead the Lady Bears. Eades, who improved to 7-16 on the season, surrendered two hits and two walks in six innings of play and threw two strikeouts.

Hampton (9-24) was led by Brown, who recorded two hits in four at bats, while driving in two runs and had two stolen bases. Byrd was charged with the loss allowing seven runs on eight hits, three walks and had six strikeouts in eight innings of work.

DSU Takes Two From UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The hits and runs were plentiful Saturday afternoon at Lady Hawks Field for the Delaware State University softball team as they defeated the Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-3 and 12-1, in a MEAC doubleheader.

Six Lady Hornets posted multiple hits on the day and were led by junior Jordan Reid and freshman Stephanie Martello.  Reid went 5-for-6 on the day with six runs scored, three RBI and a triple while Martello went 5-for-7 with four runs, 3 RBI, a home run and double.

Senior Andrea Waters and junior Casey Beighley each went 3-for-7 on the afternoon.  Waters tallied four RBI and four runs on two doubles while Beighley posted two runs, one RBI and a double.

In the first game of the doubleheader, DSU held an 8-3 lead after five innings before posting six runs in the top of the sixth to run-rule the Lady Hawks, 13-3.

Freshman Ashlyn Campbell earned her seventh win of the season for the Lady Hornets as she pitched 3.1 innings and gave up just three runs (all earned) on four hits and three strikeouts.

In the second game of the afternoon, Reid led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an error by catcher Charlise Castro.  Martello took advantage of the situation and smashed a two-run homer over the center field fence to take an immediate 2-0 lead.

DSU built on that lead in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs on five hits.

Junior Breanne Parr was first to reach base on a walk and then advanced to third on a double down the left field line by junior Leslie Pleasanton. Junior Chelsea Stern followed with another walk and all three scored on a triple down the left field line by Reid.

The hits kept on coming as Waters then hit an RBI double to left field, Martello hit an RBI single up the middle and Beighley doubled to right center.

Each team posted a run in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough for UMES as they fell victim to the run-rule once again, this time at 12-1.

Beighley earned her sixth victory of the year in the win as she went 3.0 innings strong, giving up no runs on four hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

With the pair of wins, the Lady Hornets move to 21-10 on the season and 4-1 in the conference while the Lady Hawks fall to 6-27 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC.

NCCU Softball Sweeps North Carolina A&T State In Doubleheader

CARY, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central defeated North Carolina A&T, 12-11 and 6-3, while  freshman Cember Carmichael hit her first homerun of the season.

Both teams ended the first inning without a run.  Lady Eagles then made their first strike in the bottom of the second.  With sophomore Mae'Risha Watts at bat, Carmichael rounded the bases for the first run of the afternoon.  Sophomore Nadia Jefferies reached home plate off of freshman Regina Diaz's time at the plate.

The Lady Aggies placed two runs on the board in the top of the third.  Detavia Kenan hit a double to left center field sending Morgan Chappell home for run number one.  Kenan then rounded the bases and headed home by Ryan Hill's single up the middle.

NCCU regained the lead with freshman Amanda Bullock scoring a run off a throwing error by A&T in the bottom of the third inning.

Refusing to let the Lady Eagles maintain their lead, the Lady Aggies scored a run in the top of the fourth. As well as only permitting one hit and no runs in the bottom of the inning.

The fifth inning was pivotal inning for both teams, A&T seized four runs to gain a four run lead.  But, the mighty maroon bats ignited as NCCU scored a season-high nine runs off of five hits.  One hit to left center field by Carmichael sent three runners home and provided Carmichael her first home run as a Lady Eagle.

North Carolina A&T State made its effort to take the win by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh.  But their efforts were futile, with NCCU securing a 12-11 win against the MEAC foe.

NCCU sophomores Shamika Chavis-Hodge and Kayla McPeek shared the pitching duties during game one.  Chavis-Hodge pitched for three innings.  During her time in the circle, she struck out three batters and only allowed three hits and two runs.  McPeek faced 27 batters in four innings, she completed the game with one strikeout, 15 hits and nine runs.

N.C. A&T State's Tranea Jones pitched a complete game.  In her six innings of play, Jones threw one strikeout, permitted 13 hits, 12 runs and walked seven batters. 

In game two, NCCU seized six runs in six innings of play off of six A&T errors.  The mighty maroon scored two runs on the bottom of the first, one run in the second, another two runs in the third and they closed out the contest with a run in the sixth.  Stroud and red-shirt freshman Whitney Boykin went 2-for2 in game two.  Boykin also clutched an RBI on her two times at bat.  Jefferies and Watts were 1-for-2 from the plate.

In 6.1 innings, Aurora Baker threw three strikeouts, walked five batters and allowed 11 hits and three runs against 34 batters.  After two consecutive walks, McPeek was sent to the circle to relieve Baker in the top of the seventh where she struck out one batter and made a routine play to first base.

Clement was assigned to the mound for the Lady Aggies.  Clement pitched a complete six inning game, throwing one strike and walking four batters, while permitting 12 hits and six runs.
